The great urban university of New York City, NYU. (Okay, I might catch some flack from Columbia folk for that.) Some years it seems that there as many people hoping to get into graduate school at NYU as there are actors desperate to make it on Broadway. I meet all the GRE requirements for NYU Economics except for the Analytical Writing one. Their minimum is 5.0 and I got 4.0. Should I apply?
Hey Preet! Remember the numbers you see are just averages, not requirements. For good measure, I even had a look around on the NYU website and I saw nothing mentioning any GRE minimum requirements. In fact they even say, “Because of the diverse nature of such information, we do not adhere to strictly defined cut-off points on grade-point averages or GRE scores.” Remember the scores are just guidelines, use your own discretion when applying. If you think you have a strong case for acceptance, then go for it!

Hi, I recently took the GRE and scored a 163 on Verbal and 158 on the Quant section. I DESPERATELY want to get into NYU’s MBA program. I earned a 3.96 GPA for my Bachelor’s degree (BA Philosophy)…but that was at UNLV, which is a respectable school for sure, but certainly not in the top 50 of undergad institutions. I have two questions. First what are my chances of getting in now with my current score. And will the Magoosh premium prep help me that much, i was extremely diligent in prepping with Princeton Review, Barrons, and the ETS books – but i was caught very off guard when i took the test, as these resources turned out to be vastly different from the actual test, especially PR, which was very disconcerting. Hey JM! With MBA programs, the GRE/GMAT score is only the tip of the iceberg. These schools are insanely competitive and even people with the top scores get rejected. It’s all about work experience and your essays. You really have to show what you’ve got there. 🙂

Hey Sathwik! At the master’s level, typically schools aren’t ranked together, but programs are measured on an individual basis. I’d consult the US News report I mentioned, or have a look around on the internet for a better idea. 🙂

I am taking my GRE this Jan. I have a cg of 8.03 and have done 3 projects. What score(verbal and quant) do you think is sufficient for entrance into 10-50 ranking colleges for MS in mechanical engineering and do you think a good TOEFL score can be a substitute for a bad AWA score.

I am interested applying in financial mathematics at nyu. I have gre score 320, 170 in quant but only 150 in verbal. If i want to have any chance of getting an admit, should I retake gre for improving verbal score ? the list above requires very high gre score in mathematics department, however i am not applying in core mathematics, but in financial mathematics.What should I do? I will be glad if you share your opinion.

Hey Bhishma! I’d say that the scores are probably almost as high in financial mathematics! I’m not sure about the verbal. Since you hit about average it could be inconsequential, or the adcoms might look down upon lower verbal scores as it can be a reflection of a logic skills. I’d check around The Grad Cafe and Urch to see what info you can get. 🙂

NYU is my top choice for a Political Science PhD. Unfortunately, my first GRE did not go so well; my verbal was only a 157 (73rd percentile), and my math was an abysmal 148 (33rd percentile). However, my AWA was a 5.0 (93rd percentile). I debated whether or not to retake the test, ultimately deciding that at the very least I should boost my verbal by 3 points and at least bring my math up to 152/153.
Working through the one month Magoosh prep now focusing primarily on math. So far so good.
That’s great to hear, Sean! Just make sure you stay focused! Your target should put you on the lower end of the scale, which means getting in is still no walk in the park, but it’s definitely feasible! Good luck!
