GRE Accommodations: Resources, Links, and Instructions

GRE extra time and other GRE accommodations - magoosh

Whether you need GRE extra time or another form of assistance from ETS Disability Services, there are a variety of GRE test accommodations available. It’s a good idea to review the list of possible GRE accommodations and then see if you have any qualifying condition.

What kinds of GRE accommodations can I receive from ETS Disability Services?

Available GRE test accommodations from ETS Disabilities include:

  • Screen magnification
  • Selectable background and foreground colors
  • Braille
  • Oral interpreter
  • Sign Language interpreter
  • Large print (test book and/or answer sheet)
  • Recorded audio
  • Human reader
  • GRE extra time on the test
  • Extra breaks (another helpful form of GRE extra time!)

What is the GRE accommodations experience really like?

I’m glad you asked! We actually had a wonderful student touch base with us and let us know how his application for GRE extended time went. To hear about how this student got extra time, and what that looked like for him, read our post “GRE Accommodations: What to Know for Test Day.”

What do I need to do to apply for GRE accommodations?

If you plan to apply for GRE accommodations, make sure to apply early! It will take some time to assemble documentation (e.g., from a doctor’s office) and for ETS to review your documentation and make a decision. Here are the steps you should take to apply:

  • Identify the specific accommodations that you need and will apply for
  • Collect documentation of your disability (examples here)
  • Fill out the Testing Accommodations Request Form. This can be done by logging into your ETS account. You’ll find specific instructions on how to log in and fill out the form in the ETS Disabilities Bulletin Supplement.
  • Register! Don’t forget that you have to apply before you register for the test. Once your accommodation is approved, ETS Disability Services will send you info on how to register.
  • Make sure to allow six weeks for a decision
