{"id":495,"date":"2012-01-19T16:15:00","date_gmt":"2012-01-20T00:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/?p=495"},"modified":"2016-11-22T16:12:29","modified_gmt":"2016-11-23T00:12:29","slug":"gmat-grammar-less-vs-fewer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/gmat-grammar-less-vs-fewer\/","title":{"rendered":"GMAT Grammar: Less vs. Fewer"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Overcoming some of the most common grammar mistakes<\/h2>\n<p>In the business world, there are plenty of numbers, and those numbers are always in flux, going up or down.\u00a0 Not surprisingly, many of the sentences you will correct on the GMAT have topics that discuss quantities of various things and how those quantities change.\u00a0 Much of the language to discuss quantities is quite familiar and intuitive, where mere familiarity with spoken English is more than enough preparation.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the spoken English all around us contains a couple screaming errors, errors that will sound correct to us because we hear them said all the time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The Big Diagram for the Language of Comparing Quantities<\/h2>\n<p>The first thing we need to clarify is: Of the many things in the world that increase and decrease, some come in <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">countable units<\/span>, while others, though you can have more or less of them,\u00a0cannot be counted.<\/p>\n<p>Quantities that come in countable units include anything you can count:\u00a0cars, trips to Hawaii, dollars, tasks, orders, units of time, units of length, elected officials, countries, etc.\u00a0 Anything you can count.<\/p>\n<p>Quantities that are inherently uncountable include: sickness, health, patience, knowledge, travel, work, time, length, democracy, and justice.\u00a0 Anything which you can&#8217;t count, but of which you can have more or less.<\/p>\n<p>Below are examples of words and phrases used with countable and uncountable quantities. Pay attention to what sounds unfamiliar.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;m going to make a prediction: the examples that sound awkward\u00a0are all in the &#8220;COUNTABLE&#8221; slots, especiall #4, #6, #8, and possibly #9.\u00a0 That&#8217;s where most people\u00a0make mistakes.\u00a0 These mistakes are pervasive: have you ever seen, at the checker in the grocery store, the embarrassingly ungrammatical sign that says, &#8220;Ten items or less&#8221;?!?<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re clear about this distinction, you will experience less uncertainty on the Sentence Correction questions, and you will make fewer mistakes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a01. Asking About Quantity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>UN<\/strong>COUNTABLE: how much<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>How much<\/em>\u00a0does she travel?\u00a0<em>How much\u00a0<\/em>time did you work on that?<\/p>\n<p><strong>COUNTABLE: how many<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>How many<\/em>\u00a0trips does she take?\u00a0<em>How many<\/em>\u00a0hours did you work on that?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a02. Comparing Equal Quantities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>UN<\/strong>COUNTABLE: as much as<\/strong>:\u00a0Does your professor have\u00a0<em>as much<\/em>\u00a0knowledge\u00a0<em>as\u00a0<\/em>mine?<\/p>\n<p><strong>COUNTABLE: as many as<\/strong>:\u00a0Has your professor written\u00a0<em>as many<\/em>\u00a0books\u00a0<em>as<\/em>\u00a0mine?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a03. Mike holds an A.B. in Physics (graduating <em>magna cum laude<\/em>) and an M.T.S. in Religions of the World, both from Harvard. Beyond standardized testing, Mike has over 20 years of both private and public high school teaching experience specializing in math and physics. In his free time, Mike likes smashing foosballs into orbit, and despite having no obvious cranial deficiency, he insists on rooting for the NY Mets.
