We can\u2019t rely on the conversations we have and we can\u2019t rely on vocabulary word lists. So if you are looking to boost your verbal score, don\u2019t just use practice problems. Expand your practice and studying to high quality news articles from trusted news sources.<\/p>\n<p>But what is a high-quality, trusted news source?<\/p>\n<p>A fair question indeed! Our lives are suffused with text and media. Wading through this mess and finding quality content is not easy. We yearn for a trusted friend to recommend something to read because we know that it will at least rise above a threshold of quality.<\/p>\n<p>What follows is a collection of writers that Magooshers like to read. These authors, journalists, and columnists write for distinguished news outlets and consistently write quality articles.<\/p>\n<p>Before we dive into the authors, remember that it is not just what you read that matters. It is how you read as well. <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/gmat-reading-comprehension\/\">Cultivate an active reading style<\/a> as you read on a daily basis. Don\u2019t passively take in the information; constantly seek meaning as you read.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What To Read\u2014According to Margarette<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/about-us\/\">Margarette<\/a>, our Director of Marketing, recommended these authors in <em>The Atlantic<\/em>. He also contributes his thoughts and musings to <em>The Los Angeles Times<\/em> too. He writes funny pieces on pop culture and politics that are easy to relate to. This is a perfect writer to read when you don\u2019t feel motivated to read anything to dense, but still want to spend time practicing your active reading. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ideas.time.com\/2013\/02\/28\/happy-90th-birthday-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cHappy 90th Birthday, TIME!\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/swampland.time.com\/2012\/11\/07\/voting-with-the-1-percent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cVoting with the 1%\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/specials\/packages\/article\/0,28804,2101745_2102368,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cCrazy, Stupid, Cool\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What To Read\u2014According to Peter<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/about-us\/\">Peter<\/a>, who manages our Business Development, recommended the following authors. I am going to start reading some of these authors after his recommendations. I went through and chose some articles to get you started. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/bios\/adam_gopnik\/search?contributorName=adam%20gopnik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Gopnik<\/a> has been writing fiction, humor pieces, book reviews, and other reporting pieces for <em>The New Yorker <\/em>since 1986.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/arts\/critics\/atlarge\/2014\/02\/17\/140217crat_atlarge_gopnik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Bigger than Phil&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/comment\/2013\/12\/the-yankees-theory-of-new-york-policing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;The Yankees Theory of New York Policing&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/online\/blogs\/comment\/2013\/11\/how-a-gun-dealer-sees-it.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cHow a Gun Dealer Sees It\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not a journalist, but a compelling writer, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alain_de_Botton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alain de Botton<\/a> writes his thoughts in his <a href=\"http:\/\/alaindebotton.com\/thoughts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog<\/a>. At times pretentious, but, ultimately, entertaining, de Botton writes about the philosophy of everyday life. He hasn\u2019t written much on his blog, but there are two interesting articles worth perusing.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/alaindebotton.com\/on-being-good\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cOn Being Good\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/alaindebotton.com\/a-new-priesthood-psychotherapists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cA New Priesthood: Psychotherapists\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Glenn Kessler, <em>The Washington Post<\/em> fact checker, is always an enjoyable read. He does a good job of breaking down arguments and details, which is always useful on tests, especially the GMAT.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/fact-checker\/wp\/2014\/04\/07\/mcconnells-stale-inflated-claim-on-health-plan-cancellations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cMcConnell\u2019s stale, inflated claim about health-plan cancellations\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/fact-checker\/wp\/2014\/03\/19\/fact-checking-vladimir-putins-speech-on-crimea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cFact Checking Vladimir Putin\u2019s speech on Crimea\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/fact-checker\/wp\/2014\/03\/12\/edward-snowdens-claim-that-as-a-contractor-he-had-no-proper-channels-for-protection-as-a-whistleblower\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cEdward Snowden\u2019s claim that he had \u2018no proper channels\u2019 for protection as a whistleblower\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Undeniably, the best way to expand vocabulary and knowledge is by reading.
