{"id":2989,"date":"2012-10-31T09:00:23","date_gmt":"2012-10-31T16:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/?p=2989"},"modified":"2024-06-03T16:45:48","modified_gmt":"2024-06-03T23:45:48","slug":"gmat-coordinate-geometry-distance-between-two-points","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/gmat-coordinate-geometry-distance-between-two-points\/","title":{"rendered":"GMAT Coordinate Geometry: Distance Between Two Points"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>How do you find the distance between two points in the x-y plane?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First, try these practice questions.<\/p>\n<p>1) What is the distance from (\u20137, 2) to (5, \u20133)?<\/p>\n<ul>\n\t(A) 10<br \/>\n\t(B) 11<br \/>\n\t(C) 12<br \/>\n\t(D) 13<br \/>\n\t(E) 14\n<\/ul>\n<p>2) Consider the three points in the x-y plane: P = (8, 4), Q = (6, 7), and R = (9, 0).\u00a0 Rank these three points from closest to the origin, (0, 0), to furthest from the origin.<\/p>\n<ul>\n\t(A) P, Q, R<br \/>\n\t(B) P, R, Q<br \/>\n\t(C) Q, P, R<br \/>\n\t(D) R, P, Q<br \/>\n\t(E) R, Q, P\n<\/ul>\n<p>3) Trapezoid JKLM in the x-y plane has coordinates J = (\u20132, \u20134), K = (\u20132, 1), L = (6, 7), and M = (6, \u20134).\u00a0 What is its perimeter?<\/p>\n<ul>\n\t(A) 34<br \/>\n\t(B) 36<br \/>\n\t(C) 38<br \/>\n\t(D) 40<br \/>\n\t(E) 42\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The x-y plane<\/h2>\n<p>The x-y plane is sometimes called the Cartesian plane, in honor of its creator, the multitalented philosopher and mathematician <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ren%C3%A9_Descartes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ren\u00e9 Descartes<\/a> (1596 \u2013 1650).\u00a0 In the x-y plane, the x-coordinate of any point gives its horizontal position, how far right or left of the y-axis it is; the y-coordinate of any points gives its vertical position, how far above or below the x-axis it is.\u00a0 Notice that, on any horizontal line, all the y-coordinates would have to be the same, and on any vertical line, all the x-coordinates would have to be the same.\u00a0 Also notice: if any two points have the same x-coordinate, the segment that connects them must be vertical; and if any two points have the same y-coordinate, the segment that connects them must be horizontal.\u00a0 Those are very handy facts to know for the GMAT.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Finding distance in the x-y plane.<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Big Idea #1: Horizontal &amp; vertical distances are very easy to find!!\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If two points have the same <strong>y<\/strong>-coordinate, then the segment connected them is <strong>horizontal<\/strong>.\u00a0 Simply subtract their x-coordinates to find the length of the segment between them.<\/p>\n<p>If two points have the same <strong>x<\/strong>-coordinate, then the segment connected them is <strong>vertical<\/strong>.\u00a0 Simply subtract their y-coordinates to find the length of the segment between them.<\/p>\n<p>BTW, whenever the GMAT gives you a geometric figure in the x-y plane and one or more of the sides are horizontal and\/or vertical, the test is handing you a gift on a silver platter.\u00a0 Never fail to appreciate that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big Idea #2: For any oblique distance, use the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/the-pythagorean-theorem-on-the-gmat\/\"><strong>Pythagorean Theorem<\/strong><\/a><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps in school you encountered something called the Distance Formula.\u00a0 If you already have that memorized and use it flawlessly, then good for you.\u00a0 If you don&#8217;t have it memorized, then I want you to blot out of your mind any trace of its existence. \u00a0I don&#8217;t want you to memorize a needlessly complicated formula: instead, I want you to remember a simple procedure that accomplishes exactly the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>The big idea is: use that most miraculously amazing theorem of mathematics, the Pythagorean Theorem.\u00a0 Combine this insight with Big Idea #1: we know horizontal &amp; vertical distances are very easy to find, so construct a right triangle so that the distance you want to find is the hypotenuse, one leg is horizontal, and the other leg is vertical.\u00a0 Thus, you automatically get a triangle in which two of the sides are very simple to find, and the triangle is also automatically a right triangle, which guarantees that we can use the Pythagorean Theorem.\u00a0 For example, if we need to find the distance between A = (\u20131, 1) and B = (3, 3) &#8212;-<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2991\" title=\"ditxyp_img1\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"536\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img1.png 536w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img1-300x252.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8212; then we simply draw a vertical segment going down from B, and a horizontal segment going to the right from A, and choose the third vertex, C, at the intersection:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img2.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2992\" title=\"ditxyp_img2\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img2.png 534w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img2-300x253.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Well, clearly AC = 4 and BC = 2, so then we are set up to find AB with the Pythagorean Theorem.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img3.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2993\" title=\"ditxyp_img3\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"79\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img3.png 380w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img3-300x62.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you understand these two &#8220;big ideas&#8221;, then that&#8217;s all you need to know about distance in the x-y plane for the GMAT.\u00a0 If you had trouble with the practice questions, you may want to give them another look before reading the solutions below.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s another question from inside the Magoosh product:<\/p>\n<p>4) <a href=\"http:\/\/gmat.magoosh.com\/questions\/820\">http:\/\/gmat.magoosh.com\/questions\/820<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Practice problem solutions<\/h2>\n<p>1) Suppose we made a right triangle, as in the example above.\u00a0 The difference in the x-coordinates is (\u20137) \u2013 5 = \u201312, so the horizontal leg would have a length of 12 (length has to be positive). The difference in the y-coordinates is 2 \u2013 (\u20133) = 5, so this is the length of the vertical leg.\u00a0 We recognize that we have a common <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/pythagorean-triplets-to-memorize-for-the-gmat\/\">Pythagorean triplet<\/a>, so we don&#8217;t even need to perform a calculation: we know the length of the hypotenuse, and hence, the distance between the two points, is 13.\u00a0 Answer = <strong>D<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2) Of course, the easiest distance to find is that of point R: point R is a distance of 9 from the origin.\u00a0 To find the distance to P, we construct a triangle with a horizontal leg of 8 and a vertical leg of 4.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img4.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2994\" title=\"ditxyp_img4\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"357\" height=\"79\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img4.png 357w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img4-300x66.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 357px) 100vw, 357px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Similarly,<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img5.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2995\" title=\"ditxyp_img5\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"371\" height=\"78\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img5.png 371w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img5-300x63.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 371px) 100vw, 371px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img6.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2996\" title=\"ditxyp_img6\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"741\" height=\"40\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img6.png 741w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img6-300x16.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 741px) 100vw, 741px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Therefore P is the closest to the origin, and Q is the furthest.\u00a0 The order is P, R, Q.\u00a0 Answer = <strong>B<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3) This one may look challenging initially, but all kinds of simplifying tricks.\u00a0 First of all, J &amp; K have the same x-coordinate, so that&#8217;s a vertical segment, and the length is JK = 1 \u2013 (\u20134) = 5.\u00a0 L &amp; M also have the same x-coordinate, so that&#8217;s also a vertical segment, and the length is LM = 7 \u2013 (\u20134) = 11.\u00a0 J &amp; M have the same y-coordinate, so that&#8217;s also a horizontal segment, and the length is JM = 6 \u2013 (\u20132) = 8.\u00a0 Right there, we have the lengths of three of the four sides.<\/p>\n<p>The last side to find is KL.\u00a0 From K = (\u20132, 1), we have to go over 8 and up 6 to get to L = (6, 7), so 6 and 8 the legs of the right triangle, and KL is the hypotenuse.\u00a0 We recognize another common <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/pythagorean-triplets-to-memorize-for-the-gmat\/\">Pythagorean triplet<\/a> &#8212; (6, 8, 10), which is a multiple of the (3, 4, 5) triplet.\u00a0 Thus, without further calculations, we immediately know KL = 10.<\/p>\n<p>Perimeter = JK + KL + LM + JM = 5 + 10 + 11 + 8 = 34<\/p>\n<p>Answer = <strong>A<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For those who would like a visual, here&#8217;s the graph of this trapezoid.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img7.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2997\" title=\"ditxyp_img7\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img7.png 350w, https:\/\/magoosh.com\/gmat\/files\/2012\/10\/ditxyp_img7-215x300.png 215w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you find the distance between two points in the x-y plane?\u00a0 First, try these practice questions. 1) What is the distance from (\u20137, 2) to (5, \u20133)?
