The “I” diphthong: \/a\u026a\/\u00a0 (Rice\/Die\/Bike)<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Diphthongs are sounds that contain two sounds within one syllable. If you were to clap for each syllable while you say these words, the diphthong would be part of just one clap. Let’s take a look a the commonly used “I diphthong, pronounced as\/a\u026a\/ in both American<\/a> and British English<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How to produce \/a\u026a\/\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To make the \/a\u026a\/\u00a0 diphthong sound, you will need to know how to make the separate sounds of \/a\/ as in \u201cstart<\/em>\u201d and \u201carm<\/em>\u201d, and \/\u026a\/, as in \u201cfish\u201d and \u201cpin\u201d, shortly after each other. In a diphthong, the sound slides from the one sound, in this case the \/a\/ to the \/\u026a\/. You may notice that your jaw closes slightly as you move from the \/a\/ sound to the \/\u026a\/ sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

As mentioned, we use this sound a lot in both <\/span>British<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>American English<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \/a\u026a\/ sound can be created in multiple ways, including by writing i<\/em>, i<\/em> plus \u201cmagic e\u201d, ie, ig, igh, y.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
