If you were to clap for each syllable while you say these words, the diphthong would be part of just one clap. This article will discuss a diphthong unique to the British accent, the \/e\u0259\/ diphthong, or the&#8221;air&#8221; diphthong.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To make the \/e\u0259\/ diphthong sound, you will need to know how to make the separate sounds of \/e\/ as in \u201cegg\u201d and \u201cany,\u201d and \/\u0259\/, <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4341&amp;preview=true\">the schwa sound<\/a>, shortly after each other. In a diphthong, the sound slides from the one sound, in this case the \/e\/ to the \/\u0259\/. You may notice that your mouth closes slightly and your lips move slightly forward as the vowel sound changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Very few American dialects contain this sound;\u00a0 the &#8220;air&#8221; diphthong\u00a0 pronounced as \/e\u0259\/ is far more common in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/learn-how-to-speak-with-a-british-accent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">British English<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Examples of the &#8220;Air&#8221; Diphthong as \/<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">e\u0259\/<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The \/e\u0259\/ sound can be written in many different ways.
