When it comes to the pronunciation of these consonants, we divide them into 2 categories: voiced and voiceless consonants.\u00a0 Keep in mind, s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ome consonant sounds are a combination of letters (e.g. <em>ch<\/em> or <em>th<\/em>). Happily, we write <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">16 of the 24 consonants sounds just using their own letters! the \/h\/ sound is called a \u201cvoiceless glottal fricative,\u201d which means that you make the sound with the motion of your vocal cords but it is not voiced.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In these cases, when you place your hand on your throat, you won\u2019t feel any vibrations when pronouncing these sounds<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Voiced consonant: The \/j\/ Sound\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is the first sound in: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">yes, year, yet, young, you, university, unit<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s a middle sound in: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">beautiful, view<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To produce the <\/span><b>\/j\/<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or \u201cy\u201d sound, raise the middle part of the tongue against the centre of your palate without touching it. Open your mouth to produce the \u201cy\u201d sound and the vowel that follows it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tip:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The <\/span><b>\/j\/ <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s similar to a short \/i\/ or \/\u026a\/ quickly followed by a vowel, however your tongue will be closer to the roof of your mouth than when producing the \/i\/ or \/\u026a\/.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Tip for Spanish speakers: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This sound is often problematic for Spanish speakers, but it\u2019s essentially the same sound that you hear at the beginning of <em>hielo, hiato<\/em> or <em>i\u00f3nico<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ESL students commonly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4293&amp;preview=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">confused this sound with \/\u02a4\/<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or omit it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Pronounce:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes, you\u2019ll have a beautiful view this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Voiced: The \/\u014b\/ Sound (<\/b><b><i>ng<\/i><\/b><b>)\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The \u201cng\u201d sound is a voiced nasal consonant produced with the back of the tongue touching the soft palate; the air flows out of the nose.
