In this article, we&#8217;ll discuss their differences and explain how to pronounce stops and continuants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">First, a \u201cstop\u201d (also called a plosive) is a consonant that is pronounced in a way that the airflow is stopped.\u00a0 A \u201ccontinuant\u201d is pronounced with a prolonged airflow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, think about the \/s\/ sound.\u00a0 This sound is continuant because we can continue that <em>sssssssss<\/em> sound for as long as we have the breath to do so.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But if we say a word like \u201c<em>sip<\/em>,\u201d we cannot continue the final consonant, \/p\/ because we stop the airflow by closing our lips.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>English stops include<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[p] <\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4297&amp;preview=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[b]<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4308&amp;preview=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[t]<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[d] <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[k] <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[g]\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[\u0294] voiceless glottal (ex. found in the middle of uh-oh)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>English continuants include\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vowels\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sounds called fricatives:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[f]<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> [v] <\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4306&amp;preview=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[\u03b8] <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[\u00f0]<\/span> <\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4290&amp;preview=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[s] <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> [z]<\/span> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4288&amp;preview=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[\u222b]<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 [h] \u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[\u0292] (like in the second syllable of leisure)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a03. Sounds called glides<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4297&amp;preview=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[w]<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4293&amp;preview=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0[j]<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (the \u201cy\u201d sound)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Holding Final Stops<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In general, American native English speakers do not release the final stops &#8211; the lips stay closed. The result is a \u201chalf\u201d sound. If the lips were released, there would be a slight puff of air released to complete the sound.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shall we try another one?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s take the sound \/g\/. When you say the word bag, don\u2019t release the \/g\/.
