T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">o pronounce the rhotic <em>r<\/em>, or \u201cAmerican \/r\/,\u201d however, you must produce it from the back of the mouth, with the tip of the tongue touching nothing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Although this is often called the &#8220;American r,&#8221; this same sounds occurs in British English, just not as frequently! People with an <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/tips-for-learning-the-american-accent\/\">American accent<\/a> pronounce a <em>rhotic r<\/em> in words like <em>car, bear, fear, hard, form<\/em>, and <em>first<\/em>.\u00a0 <em>Non-rhotic speakers<\/em>, however, like those who speak <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/learn-how-to-speak-with-a-british-accent\/\">British English<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/how-to-speak-with-an-australian-accent\/\">Australian English<\/a> do not pronounce the \/r\/ in those words. In other words, Americans (and Canadians) pronounce \/r\/ in <em>all<\/em> positions, while non-rhotic speakers pronounce \/r\/ only if it is followed by a vowel sound.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The American R\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/501091453?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to produce the rhotic <em>r<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you find this sound tricky, you&#8217;re not alone! It&#8217;s a sound that native English speakers commonly struggle to pronounce as children.\u00a0 There are two different positions you can try to produce this \/r\/ sound, so choose the one that&#8217;s easiest for you to make:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Curl your tongue back slightly, keeping it tense.\u00a0 OR<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep the front of your tongue flat and press the back of your tongue against the back teeth.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One method that has proved helpful to many English learning is this:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Start by pronouncing a \u201clong e\u201d sound\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While producing that <em>ee<\/em> sound, gradually curl the tip of your tongue back, making sure that it touches nothing.\u00a0 You should naturally produce the \/r\/ at the end!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Words that you can practice with are: <em>ear, beer, peer<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Reminder:<\/strong> The <em>r<\/em> is always pronounced in American English, even at the end of words, like in <em>more, far, mother<\/em>, and before a consonant, like in <em>morning, survive<\/em> and <em>thirty<\/em>.
