The tip of the tongue taps behind the front teeth to release a puff of air. However, t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he <em>t<\/em> can be pronounced in several different ways, depending on where it falls in a word and depending on the other sounds that follow it. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes, it can sound like a <em>d<\/em>, it can be \u201cstopped,\u201d it can be silent and it can even change to a different sound when followed by certain sounds!\u00a0 These are the many sounds of <em>t<\/em>!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Elision of T (\u201cHeld t\u201d)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <em>t<\/em> is the most commonly \u201cheld\u201d consonant in American English and this phenomenon is one of the most distinguishing features of the American accent. Other English accents and non-native speakers usually release the final <em>t<\/em> sound when the next word begins with a consonant. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4270&amp;preview=true\">this article to learn about <strong>elision<\/strong><\/a>, or other &#8220;held&#8221; sounds in English.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How is the t held?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Method 1<\/strong>: Your tongue should touch just behind your teeth, with no release of air.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Method 2<\/strong>: Stop air flow by closing your vocal cords.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>When should you hold the t?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hold the <em>t<\/em> when the next letter is a consonant, within a word or in the next word.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Examples: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cnightmare,\u201d \u201ccan\u2019t complain\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>A. The Flap <em>T<\/em> (or Fast D)\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <em>t<\/em> is pronounced as a &#8220;flap <em>t<\/em>&#8221; or &#8220;fast<em> d&#8221;<\/em> sound in certain cases. This sound is produced when you quickly tap the tip of the tongue just behind your front teeth when pronouncing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How do we know when to pronounce the &#8220;flap t&#8221;?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Between two vowels: <em>water<\/em> sounds like \u201cwadder\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before an \u201cl\u201d: <em>little<\/em> sounds like \u201cliddle\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After an \u201cr\u201d: <em>party<\/em> sounds like \u201cpardy\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After a \u2018c\u2019 \/k\/ or \/s\/ sound: <em>doctor<\/em> sounds like \u201cdokder\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 40px\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Exception alert:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don&#8217;t pronounce <em>t<\/em> as a \u201cfast <em>d<\/em>\u201d sound if it\u2019s in a <em>stressed<\/em> syllable.
