{"id":4306,"date":"2021-04-05T18:21:08","date_gmt":"2021-04-06T01:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4306"},"modified":"2021-04-12T22:55:56","modified_gmt":"2021-04-13T05:55:56","slug":"the-th-sounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/the-th-sounds\/","title":{"rendered":"The TH Sounds"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>The Trouble with the TH Sounds<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The problem many English learners have when pronouncing the TH sounds is twofold.\u00a0 We cannot pronounce the TH sounds correctly if one or both of the following is true:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the tongue remains inside the mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">tongue tip is pressed against the teeth resulting in \/t\/ or \/d\/ instead of <em>th<\/em>. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For speakers of some languages, it is also common for the tongue to vibrate just behind the front teeth, creating a \/z\/ sound instead of the <em>th<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you need some tips to correct your pronunciation?\u00a0 \u00a0If so, one of the following methods should help you:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tips for pronouncing (and linking!) the TH sounds correctly:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>TIP 1:<\/strong> Try pronouncing the N sound, but with your tongue touching the bottom of your front teeth, and then relax your tongue from that position (allowing\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">air to pass) to create the <em>th<\/em> sound. Don\u2019t allow for a break between N and TH. This exercise can also be helpful because you will very often have to pronounce the <em>th<\/em> sounds in combinations like you see below.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Start with the single word and then add the TH word.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IN \u2192\u00a0 IN THERE\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ON \u2192 ON THEM\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IN \u2192 IN THAT\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IN \u2192 IN THOUGHT<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>TIP 2<\/strong>: Try pronouncing a T sound (but with the tongue just below the front teeth, not behind) and then relax your tongue from that position (allowing air to pass) to create the TH sound.\u00a0 Again, don\u2019t allow a break between T and TH.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AT \u2192\u00a0 AT THE<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IT \u2192 IT THINKS<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AT\u2192 AT THOSE\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The 2 TH Sounds\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So why have we been speaking of &#8220;the <em>th<\/em> sounds&#8221; in plural?\u00a0 Did you know there are 2 distinct<em> th<\/em> sounds: <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/voiced-and-voiceless-consonants\/\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff\">voiceless &amp; voiced<\/span><\/a>?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<h3><strong>The Voiceless TH<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The soft <em>th<\/em>, which looks like \/\u03b8\/ in the phonetic alphabet, is called voiceless because it doesn\u2019t produce a vibration from your vocal chords \u2013 it involves only passing air through your teeth<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you speak Spanish, you may find the example of Spain\u2019s \u201ctheta\u201d sound helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Beginning \/\u03b8\/<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">thanks<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">thirty<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>End \/\u03b8\/<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">breath<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bath<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Middle \/\u03b8\/<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nothing<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ether<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0\u00a0Let\u2019s try a voiceless <em>th<\/em> combination:\u00a0 <strong><em>Thanks for nothing, Heath!<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\n<h3><strong> The Voiced TH<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The &#8220;hard&#8221; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How do we know if the TH is voiced or voiceless?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are 5 rules that should help you determine whether a <em>th<\/em> should be voiced or voiceless.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> between two vowels <em>th<\/em> is voiced: <em>mother, bother, weather<\/em>, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the end of the word or before a consonant, <em>th<\/em> is unvoiced: <em>myth, mouth, mouthful, bath, truthful, throw,<\/em> etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> when followed by a silent <em>e<\/em>, <em>th<\/em> is voiced. Ex. <em>ba<strong>th<\/strong><\/em> (unvoiced); <em>ba<strong>the<\/strong><\/em> (voiced).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the beginning of functional words <em>th<\/em> is voiced.
