{"id":4275,"date":"2021-04-03T19:44:57","date_gmt":"2021-04-04T02:44:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/?p=4275"},"modified":"2021-04-03T19:44:57","modified_gmt":"2021-04-04T02:44:57","slug":"intrusive-sounds-when-sounds-are-added","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/intrusive-sounds-when-sounds-are-added\/","title":{"rendered":"Intrusive Sounds (When Sounds are Added)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Intrusive sounds are a feature of connected speech.\u00a0 What does intrusion mean?\u00a0 This phenomenon happens in American English when we say two words one after the other and add an extra sound between them to make them easier to say.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Intrusive sounds when linking two vowels:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If one word ends with a vowel and the next word begins with a vowel, there should not be a pause between the words. To accomplish this, for a smoother transition between the vowels, we insert the intrusive sounds <em>y<\/em> and <em>w<\/em>\u00a0between the two vowels.\u00a0 More specifically, this means we add a short <em>y<\/em> (\/j\/) sound after a <em>front<\/em> vowel (like \/e\u026a\/, \/i\/, and \/ai\/) and a short <em>w<\/em> sound after a <em>back<\/em> vowel (like \/\u028a\/ and \/o\u028a\/).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Examples:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Intrusive \/w\/ sound:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pronounce<em> go over<\/em>\u00a0as\u00a0 \u201cgo-wover\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pronounce<em> How are you?<\/em>\u00a0as\u00a0 \u201chow-warr you\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Intrusive \/j\/ (<em>y<\/em>) sound\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pronounce<em> I ate<\/em>\u00a0as \u201cI yate\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pronounce<em> he is<\/em>\u00a0as \u201che yis\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>For example<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-4275-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/files\/intrusive-w-and-y.m4a?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/files\/intrusive-w-and-y.m4a\">https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/files\/intrusive-w-and-y.m4a<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> We <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">y<\/span>ate in.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5.
