There&#8217;s a word for that: elision. Elision is when a sound disappears from a word. Basically, a sound is deleted or \u201cswallowed\u201d by other stronger or similar sounds next to it. This often happens with a \/t\/ or \/d\/ sound, and also occurs in common words.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Elision in Common Words<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the following list of words, we do not pronounce each syllable as it appears. For example, instead of saying <em>fa-mi-ly<\/em>, most native speakers would pronounce the words as <em>fam-ly<\/em>. In most cases, a middle vowel disappears. In contrast, other English accents and non-native speakers usually release the final t sound when the next word begins with a consonant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>So how is the t held?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Method 1: Your tongue should touch just behind your teeth, with no release of air.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Method 2: Stop air flow by closing your vocal cords.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ok, so when should you hold the t?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hold the<em> t<\/em> when the next letter is a consonant, within a word or in the next word.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example: <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cnightmare\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0 \u201ccan\u2019t complain\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Held t + Consonant<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A. Certain<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Elision of D<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The \/d\/ is often dropped when a word ending in \/nd\/ is followed by a consonant sound.
