And they\u2019re very important in language because they often help identify or express key information that reveals\u00a0 a speaker\u2019s meaning. In this article, we\u2019re taking a closer look at a specific type of adverb called Adverbs of Frequency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What do Adverbs of Frequency describe?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adverbs of Frequency describe how often a verb, or action, happens. There are six key adverbs we use in English to indicate how frequently an action happens. They are: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">never, rarely, sometimes, often, usually (or normally), and always.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Think of the list\u2014in this order\u2014as increasing in frequency, and you can identify the difference with these percentages.<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adverb of Frequency<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Frequency Percentage<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Never<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">0%<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rarely<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">20%<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sometimes<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">50%<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Often<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">70%<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Usually (or normally)<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">80%<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Always<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">100%<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Learning Adverbs of Frequency<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To fully understand these adverbs, let\u2019s look at their position in a sentence and some other uses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Subject + Adverb of Frequency + Verb<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most often, you\u2019ll see an adverb of frequency between a subject and a verb.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He <\/span><b><i>never<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> said anything about the broken copier.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Those two <\/span><b><i>rarely <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">go outside anymore since they started college.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We would <\/span><b><i>sometimes <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">walk towards the bridge when we wanted to talk longer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The dog <\/span><b><i>often <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wanders into the kitchen hoping for a treat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She <\/span><b><i>usually <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">drops her kids off for school around 8 a.m.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They <\/span><b><i>always<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> go to the cafe for breakfast on Sunday mornings.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>After a \u2018be verb\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, there is an exception. It happens when the adverb of frequency follows a \u2018be verb.\u2019 In that situation, the adverb follows the verb. As in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adverbs of Frequency are <\/span><b><i>often <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">placed after a noun, but sometimes they follow a \u2018be verb.\u2019<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They are <\/span><b><i>never <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He is <\/span><b><i>rarely <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">late.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She is <\/span><b><i>usually <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on her daily run around this time.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>At the beginning of a sentence<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last, it isn\u2019t uncommon to see \u2018sometimes\u2019 and \u2018usually\u2019 at the beginning of a sentence. Here are some examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>Usually <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they go for a run as a group on Saturday mornings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>Sometimes <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the cat likes to hide in the closet.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>As part of a question<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The most common question using an adverb of frequency is \u2018how often?\u2019 As in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>How often<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> do you go to the gym?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>How often<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> does she go to visit her parents?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b><i>How often<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> does he restock the refrigerator?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, there are also questions using an adverb of frequency that follow the typical pattern of subject + adverb + verb<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do you <\/span><b><i>always <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lock the door when you get home?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Does she <\/span><b><i>usually <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">come home so early<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Using a Modal Verb with an Adverb of Frequency<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sometimes adverbs of frequency are used with <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/modal-verbs-and-their-expressive-forms\/\">modal verbs<\/a>.
