This tradition dates back to the first Bond film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. No<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (1962), in which Sean Connery (playing \u201cAgent 007\u201d) requests a special \u201cGeiger counter\u201d (a device that detects <\/span><b><i>radioactivity<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">). While a Geiger counter is a device that people use in the real world, it led to increasingly <\/span><b><i>implausible<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> gadgets in subsequent Bond films.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bond usually gets his devices from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Q<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the head of <\/span><b><i>research and development <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for the British Secret Service. In addition to the Geiger counter, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Q <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">supplied the first James Bond with a special briefcase that had secret compartments containing guns, ammunition, and a throwing knife. If the wrong person opened it, the briefcase would even spray the <\/span><b><i>intruder<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with tear gas!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Early Years<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the earliest Bond films, the gadgets were often based on real-life <\/span><b><i>appliances<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that already existed. For example, in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On Her Majesty\u2019s Secret Service<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (the first Bond film not to feature Sean Connery as the <\/span><b><i>dashing<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> British spy), Bond uses a device to opens locks, though it also had an attached copy machine. In 1969 (the year of the movie\u2019s release), a portable copy machine was already pretty advanced, even if it wasn\u2019t able to crack open locks!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>More Advanced Tech<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When Roger Moore took over the role in 1973, the gadgets started getting more advanced and&#8230;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">bizarre<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In Moore\u2019s first Bond film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Live and Let Die<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Q<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provides <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">007<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with an anti-shark gun. What exactly is an anti-shark gun? It\u2019s a gun that shoots special <\/span><b><i>pellets<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that will literally cause a shark (or even a person) to explode! Moore would go on to use dozens of gadgets during his <\/span><b><i>tenure<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, including a magnetic watch, a submarine car, and even a <\/span><b><i>boombox<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that doubles as a rocket launcher!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By the time Pierce Brosnan became James Bond in 1995, the advancement of real-life technology made many of Bond\u2019s old gadgets look relatively <\/span><b><i>low-tech<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Goldeneye<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, 007 uses a watch that can shoot lasers, but his gadgets would only get more advanced from there. He would eventually use a mobile phone <\/span><b><i>taser<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an invisible car, and x-ray glasses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>A Return to Normalcy<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Finally, Daniel Craig helped bring the James Bond series back to Earth. The movies relied less on hi-tech gadgets and adopted a more serious tone. That said, the filmmakers didn\u2019t want to completely kill the gadget tradition. In Craig\u2019s first film, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Casino Royale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, he is implanted with a <\/span><b><i>microchip<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that allows the British Secret Service to track his location. In <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Skyfall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Bond uses a gun that can recognize his <\/span><b><i>palm print<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and only fires when he pulls the <\/span><b><i>trigger<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even though James Bond gadgets have become less extreme in recent years, you can always expect to see new hi-tech equipment in every Bond film. (noun) &#8211; The process of producing or emitting radiation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scanning for radioactivity helped 007 find the bomb.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Implausible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (adjective) &#8211; Unconvincing, unlikely, or unreasonable.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most of the gadgets introduced during the Roger Moore years were completely implausible.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Research and development<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (noun) &#8211; A small device that must be pressed for a gun to fire.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">James Bond pulled the trigger, but the gun jammed, giving the villain time to escape.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Grammar Center<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take a look at the following sentence from the passage:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When Roger Moore took over the role in 1973, the gadgets started getting more advanced and&#8230;bizarre.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The sentence above uses an informal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/toefl\/2016\/punctuation-in-english-academic-writing-part-4-ellipsis-and-asterisk\/\"><b>ellipsis<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. An ellipsis is three periods (&#8230;) in a row. While it almost always looks the same, it doesn\u2019t always serve the same purpose. Here are a few of the most common reasons to use an ellipsis:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Missing or Omitted Quotations\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re writing a direct quote in which some words are missing or you wish to remove certain words to save time and space, you should replace the missing words with an ellipsis. This is the traditional or \u201cformal\u201d use of an ellipsis. Here is an example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Original Quote<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: <em>&#8220;I just want to say, and I am really quite drunk now so I won\u2019t go on for long, this has been one of the best, most wonderful experiences I have ever had. You&#8217;ve all done the most amazing job. I could not be more proud to work with every single one of you on this production. I would like to thank you for this evening, I want to thank you for this\u2014Barbara, for putting it on. This is the \u201cinformal\u201d way to use ellipses in English writing because it is largely up to the writer to decide how and when to use them. Here are the most common ways to use ellipses:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>To emphasize a \u201cpause\u201d in speech or thought<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I enjoy watching movies&#8230;I just never have the time.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>To create anticipation or suspense<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After years of searching, Bond found it&#8230;the perfect gadget.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>To show uncertainty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I really don\u2019t know what to do&#8230;I\u2019m completely lost&#8230;<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>To leave a thought unfinished<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019d like to help, but\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ellipses can replace commas, semicolons, and colons when you want to put greater emphasis on a pause or the tone of the sentence in informal writing.
