But by the third season, 64 million households around the world had watched the entire season. Merchandise became available not only in American stores, but in European and Asian markets<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as well<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stranger Things<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> themed <\/span><b><i>pop-up<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> bar appeared in Chicago last summer for a six week run.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>How did it happen?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">begin to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">answer that question, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">we\u2019ll have to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> look at the structure of the TV streaming service Netflix itself. The company operates in 190 countries and has (as of this writing) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nearly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">183 million subscribers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> globally<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. That\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a huge audience base<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">! But even Netflix admits that just because you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have an audience<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> all over the world, it doesn\u2019t mean that a show will be popular everywhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Power of\u00a0Translation<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, with a show like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stranger Things<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, that\u2019s where the power of translation <\/span><b><i>comes into play<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. And Netflix went <\/span><b><i>all-in<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on getting the translations of the show perfect. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stranger Things<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has subtitles in 20 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">different languages<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">! In addition, the translators who work on the show have very <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">detailed and specific<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> rules they follow to convey the tone and story<\/span><b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each translator works with a key words and phrases sheet to ensure consistency in translation for every language. And, because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the show is set<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the 1980s, Netflix <\/span><b><i>went the extra mile<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to make sure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they translate words <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that were used<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the language<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at that time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. For example, season 1 of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stranger Things<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> features <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eggo <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">waffles as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a big part<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of a <\/span><b><i>plot line<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. To ensure <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">it was properly translated<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, they went through decades-old marketing materials to be sure the wording was correct.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This dedication to proper translation was also applied<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to words <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that are unique<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to the show. They researched old cultural translations for words relating to mythical creatures and other unique characters you see on the show. With that level of dedication to translation, it\u2019s no wonder the show has amassed a dedicated global <\/span><b><i>fan base<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Word Focus<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Pop-up Business<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; A business that launches at a location for a limited time; sometimes for a few hours, sometimes one day, sometimes a few weeks or months. Examples include: pop-up restaurant, pop-up shop, pop-up store, pop-up market.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They\u2019re opening up a pop-up restaurant in that location to test a concept for four months.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Come(s) into play<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">idiom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; Something that helps to produce or influence or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has an effect on<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a result.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Everything was fine until the weather came into play.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>All-in<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">adjective<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; In poker, the term refers to betting all of your money. The phrase has expanded to mean <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fully <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">committed to something.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The auto company went all-in on developing their <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new model<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Go (went) the extra mile<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">phrase<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; To put in more work or effort than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what is expected<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Theresa went the extra mile at her <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new job<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was promoted<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> within three months.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Plot line<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; A part of a connected series of stories that make up the plot of a show or movie.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The series featured many too many plot lines with supporting characters that made the story very confusing as a whole.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Fan base<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; The collective fans of a sports team, music group, tv show, movie, Broadway show, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Star Wars has one of the largest fan bases in the world.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Grammar Center<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look at this sentence from the above passage:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And Netflix went all-in on <\/span><\/i><b><i>getting the translations of the show perfect<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Notice the phrase in bold. What part of speech is that? Noun? Verb? It looks like it could be a verb, because getting is the present participle of the verb get. However, the phrase itself acts like a noun. The phrase is actually a grammar tool used in English called a <\/span><b><i>gerund phrase<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A <\/span><b><i>gerund <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is a defined as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the present participle of a verb that is used as a noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. And the gerund phrase just adds the modifiers that go with the gerund. Here are a few examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Throwing her keys in the field <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was an act of anger and stupidity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><i>Running around the track<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is one of my favorite forms of exercise.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He was always a fan of <\/span><b><i>taking the boat for a spin on the lake<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My mom always loved <\/span><b><i>baking cakes on a Sunday afternoon<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gerunds are pretty easy to spot as they always act as a noun within a sentence. They can be with the subject or the object and function exactly the same as a noun does.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The main aspect that might trick a reader is when reading a participle phrase. Remember, gerunds act like nouns and do not modify other words. You can alter some of the gerund phrases above and easily turn them into participle phrases. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Baking a cake this afternoon, my mom released a lot of tension from the week.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">baking a cake<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> modifies the verb <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">released<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as it explains <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> my mom released her tension.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you\u2019re not sure if a phrase is a gerund phrase, simply test to see if it acts like a noun and you\u2019ll be able to identify it with ease.
