But now, those networks are <\/span><b><i>eating their words<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stranger Things<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has become Netflix&#8217;s international sensation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s the show about?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The story, set in the early 1980s, unfolds in the fictional, <\/span><b><i>rural<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> town of Hawkins, Indiana where a nearby government lab conducts secret research projects on all things <\/span><b><i>supernatural<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b><i>paranormal<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Naturally, the results of their experiments spill into the lives of local residents including a group of children who serve as the <\/span><b><i>protagonists<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Why is it so popular?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stranger Things<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> taps into the <\/span><b><i>inner child<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of many Americans who grew up in the 1980s and \u201890s. The show is full of pop culture references and brings viewers back to a time when it was okay for their imagination to <\/span><b><i>run wild<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The Duffer Brothers explain that the show is inspired by many of their favorite movies, books, TV shows, and video games from the era.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Format<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stranger Things<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is released on a TV streaming service, it doesn\u2019t have to follow a traditional TV show format. Each season is limited to only eight episodes which gives the show more of a <\/span><b><i>cinematic<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> feel. Many of the <\/span><b><i>visual effects<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on the show do not use <\/span><b><i>CGI<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as the creators wanted to avoid their use. Instead, they use <\/span><b><i>practical effects<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and add <\/span><b><i>film grain<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to a lot of the footage to create the atmosphere for the story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>The Future<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After three seasons, it looks like the hit show will be around for a long run. That is, if they can keep their young actors coming back to shoot the series every year. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stranger Things<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> actors Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton have all filmed mainstream movies since finding fame on the show. And other actors on the series are also starting to see offers for other roles. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; Associated with some force or entity that is beyond scientific explanation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some houses are said to experience supernatural events because of traumatic events that happened in the area.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Paranormal<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; Associated with events, phenomena, forces, or entities that are beyond scientific explanation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There are research groups that attempt to study paranormal events and phenomena that occur all over the world.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Protagonist<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; The lead, main, or most prominent character or characters in a story (film, book, play, etc\u2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The protagonist in a story is typically presented with obstacles to overcome in order to drive a story.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Inner Child<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; In psychology, a person\u2019s childlike attributes that live unconsciously within their mind.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consciously, I hold in my anger towards my parents, but my inner child sometimes lashes out when I think about them.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Run Wild<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">phrase<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; With no restraint.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The animals were allowed to run wild in the complex.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Cinematic<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">adjective<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; Relating to a motion picture or the presentation of a motion picture.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The play was shot and retold to accommodate more of a cinematic feel and tone.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Visual Effect<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; Any special effect added to a video after it is originally shot (in post production).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Visual effects are a well-respected aspect of filmmaking and have a category within the Academy Awards.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>CGI (Computer Generated Imagery)<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; Computer technology used to create image effects for TV or film.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many stunts now utilize CGI in order to protect actors and stunt personnel.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Practical Effect<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; A special effect that is shot in live action or in real time. It is created to be filmed live.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Practical effects utilize things like camera tricks, set design, puppetry, and make-up effects.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Film Grain<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; Sand-like appearance on a film print or negative. Originally it was a result of the processing of the film. However, it is now added as a visual effect since it does not exist in digital photography.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The editors added some film grain to create an ominous atmosphere where it\u2019s difficult to see.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Grammar Center<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take a look at this sentence from the above passage:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The story, set in the early 1980s, unfolds in the fictional, rural town of Hawkins, Indiana\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the sentence, the writer uses two adjectives to describe the same noun. He states that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hawkins, Indiana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fictional <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rural<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This is an example of <\/span><b><i>coordinate adjectives<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. They\u2019re a group of two or more adjectives that modify the same noun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Writers use coordinate adjectives to give added description to something they want the reader to understand or see. In other words, they help to better paint a picture of something with words. Typically, you\u2019ll see a comma between the adjectives and\/or separated by the word \u2018and\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Examples:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They looked at the tall, bushy tree with wonder.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She looked down and saw a small, smelly, and wet puppy sitting on her porch.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Johnny pulled up in a red and damaged car he just bought for a thousand dollars.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Coordinate adjectives<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> always modify a noun independently and are fairly easy to spot if you test with these two rules.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you can add \u2018and\u2019 between the adjectives and it still makes sense.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OR<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you can reverse the order of the adjectives and it still makes sense.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let\u2019s try that with the example from the paragraph.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The story, set in the early 1980s, unfolds in the <\/span><\/i><b><i>fictional and rural town<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of Hawkins, Indiana\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The story, set in the early 1980s, unfolds in the <\/span><\/i><b><i>rural, fictional town<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of Hawkins, Indiana\u2026<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And that confirms it! <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rural <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fictional<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are coordinate adjectives for the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">town<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
