The series finale had over 50 million viewers and hundreds of millions of people (maybe even a billion) have seen at least an episode or two of the show since it first aired in 1994.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even today, 16 years after the final episode, millions of people are still streaming and watching the show in syndication on various networks. In America, you can turn on your TV in the morning, mid afternoon, or late at night, and <\/span><b><i>odds are<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> you can find an episode of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Friends<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on the air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why is the show still so popular, impactful and meaningful to people?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To answer this question, let\u2019s first travel back to the mid to late 1990s when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Friends <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was in its early years. At the time, shows still aired for a full season. Meaning audiences were with their characters nearly every week from September to May.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It created a sense of attachment to the show for an entire generation of people. Plus, there were only four <\/span><b><i>major networks<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and a limited number of original cable tv shows. This forced millions of people to pick and choose shows based on a limited number of options unlike today\u2019s TV market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With that audience, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Friends<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was the first show to change the idea of the traditional American family. From the first episode, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Friends<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> abandons the concept of a single family living <\/span><b><i>under the same roof <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">whose members all work <\/span><b><i>9-5 jobs<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and then come home to have dinner together. It presents the idea that when you\u2019re young, single, living in an apartment with roommates, and trying to make your way in life, your friends become your family.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even after all of these years, that seems to be the idea that still <\/span><b><i>resonates<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> with audiences young and old. Granted some of the jokes are outdated and others may even be considered offensive by today\u2019s standards, but the show lives on because it was, <\/span><b><i>at its core<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, was the first to present this American cultural trend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Word Focus<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Odds are<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">idiom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; Likely or probable that something will happen<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When a criminal gets away with something, odds are they\u2019ll do it again.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Major Networks<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; The four major American broadcast TV networks are NBC (National Broadcasting Company), ABC (American Broadcasting Company), CBS (Columbia Broadcasting System), and Fox.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the older eras of television, the goal of any tv show or any tv show actor was to be on a major network.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Under the same roof \/ Under one roof<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">phrase<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; Being in the same building as others.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some cultures are centered around many members of the same family living under one roof.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Nine to five (9-5) Job<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">noun<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; A routine job. Often described as boring and\/or unfulfilling. Sometimes only described as a \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">9 to 5\u2019.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My father worked a 9 to 5 for thirty years, and I refuse to go down that path.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>Resonate<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">verb<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; To evoke emotion from an audience.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The actress&#8217;s performances always resonated with her audience.<\/span><\/i><i><\/i><b><i><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><i>At (its) core<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> &#8211; (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">phrase<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) &#8211; The most essential meaning or part of something.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At his core, he was always very kind and loving though he didn\u2019t often show that side outwardly.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Grammar Center<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Read the sentence from the above passage:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">From the first episode, Friends abandons the concept of a single family living under the same roof <\/span><\/i><b><i>whose <\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">members all work 9-5 jobs and then come home to have dinner together.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Notice the writer uses <\/span><b><i>whose<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and not <\/span><b><i>who\u2019s<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the sentence. It seems simple enough, but this is one of the most common mistakes for both ESL learners and native speakers alike. In this lesson, we\u2019re going to review and simplify the rules of using <\/span><b><i>whose or who\u2019s<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The simplest detail to remember when choosing the correct word is that <\/span><b><i>who\u2019s<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is <\/span><b><i>always<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a contraction. In every situation it means either <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">who is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">who has<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Many words use an apostrophe to indicate possession, but that is not the case here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, if you break down the contraction in the sentence and it doesn\u2019t make sense, then you\u2019re probably using the wrong word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who\u2019s going to dinner with us tonight?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who is going to dinner with us tonight?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><\/i><br \/>\n<i><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who\u2019s been driving my car?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Who has been driving my car?<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The next rule to remember is that <\/span><b><i>whose<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the possessive form of <\/span><b><i>who<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019 is most often used as an adjective in that situation to identify who owns something or describe someone.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Claire, whose hair always seemed to be flowing in the wind, arrived ten minutes late.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">John was the one whose watch always seemed to be broken.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a question, \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">whose<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019 asks the ownership of a noun.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whose keys are these?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whose desk is this?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s that simple! Just remember that <\/span><b><i>whose<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is always possessive and that <\/span><b><i>who\u2019s<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is always a contraction.
