They can even confuse native speakers.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I really like cheesecake! It\u2019s one of my favorite desserts in the world. Maybe after work, I\u2019ll stop and grab a cheesecake for after dinner.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the sentence above, look at the word <em>cheesecake<\/em>. Do you notice a difference? Cheesecake has an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englishclub.com\/grammar\/determiners-articles.htm\">article<\/a> in the second sentence but not the first. Therefore, the zero article is used.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of Zero Article with Plural Nouns:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019m not a fan of <strong><em>cats<\/em><\/strong>, but I do enjoy being around <strong><em>dogs<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The supermarket was packed with many <strong><em>loaves of bread<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>She read many <strong><em>books<\/em><\/strong> over the past year.<\/li>\n<li>The shipyard was full of <strong><em>boats<\/em><\/strong> this season.<\/li>\n<li>Our team engineers <strong><em>computer parts<\/em><\/strong> for international markets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>When Using a Generalization with an Uncountable Noun<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This one is a little easier as <a href=\"https:\/\/learningenglish.voanews.com\/a\/everyday-grammar-understanding-noncount-nouns\/3193621.html\">uncountable nouns<\/a> don\u2019t require an article in most situations anyway. Uncountable nouns are always singular in form and apply to abstract items (<em>music, happiness, justice),<\/em> materials (<em>silver, wood<\/em>), substances (<em>earth, wind, fire),<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/7esl.com\/uncountable-nouns\/\">many other things<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>**Note: Uncountable nouns are also called mass nouns or noncount nouns.**<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When you use a generalization with a noncount noun, no article is needed.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of Zero Article with Uncountable Nouns:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He works in <strong><em>advertising<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>I love playing <strong><em>chess<\/em><\/strong> on Tuesday afternoons.<\/li>\n<li>We have no <strong><em>evidence<\/em><\/strong> in this case.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notice <em>evidence<\/em> in that last example. There is no article because the sentence mentions no specific evidence. Some are easy to spot because they\u2019re capitalized. It\u2019s a broad category but let\u2019s explore some examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Names<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Jerry<\/em><\/strong> is a world renowned physicist.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Sheldon<\/em><\/strong> can recite the alphabet backwards and forwards.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Leonard<\/em><\/strong> makes funny faces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Places<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We\u2019re looking at <strong><em>Jupiter<\/em><\/strong> tonight with the telescope.<\/li>\n<li>Have you been to <strong><em>Russia<\/em><\/strong>?<\/li>\n<li>I attended <strong><em>Princeton University<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Street Names<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He lives on <strong><em>Grey Street<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>I was never a fan of <strong><em>Elm Street<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Cities<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I visited <strong><em>Prague<\/em><\/strong> when I was a kid.<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever been to <strong><em>London<\/em><\/strong>?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Days\/Months<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I don\u2019t like <strong><em>Tuesdays<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>July<\/em><\/strong> is my favorite month!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Languages and Academic Subjects<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I\u2019m studying <strong><em>History<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>I speak <strong><em>Russian<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Movement or Transport Nouns<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another situation where you won\u2019t use an article is when speaking about movement or taking a transport somewhere. Instead, you\u2019ll use a preposition like <em>by<\/em> or <em>on.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I travel to work by <strong><em>train<\/em><\/strong> every day.<\/li>\n<li>He ran off on <strong><em>foot<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re traveling to New York by <strong><em>bus<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Routine Places or Institutions<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This group of nouns includes well-known or common places where people are frequently located. Again, use no article when you\u2019re making a generalization.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I can\u2019t talk right now.
