For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Joey is <strong>taller<\/strong> than John.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To describe how tall Joey is in the sentence, the writer uses John as a comparative reference.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at another:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>This car is <strong>more expensive<\/strong> than my previous vehicle.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, the writer compares the expense of a car to the one they previously owned.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Less<\/em><\/strong> is also a possibility when using a comparative reference. As in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>This car is <strong>less expensive<\/strong> than my previous vehicle.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, note the adjectives in bold. A common mistake that English learners and native speakers commonly make is using the incorrect form of a <strong><em>comparative adjective<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Her hair is <strong>more long<\/strong> than my hair. &#8211; <strong>INCORRECT<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Her hair is <strong>longer<\/strong> than my hair. &#8211; <strong>CORRECT<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why is the first example incorrect and the second correct? I\u2019m glad you asked!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Rules for Using Comparative Adjectives<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>**Note: the rules are based on the number of <strong>syllables<\/strong> and <strong>spelling<\/strong> of the adjective.**<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If an adjective has only <strong><em>one syllable,<\/em><\/strong> add <strong><em>-er<\/em><\/strong> to the end of the word. (<em>Like the example using <strong>taller<\/strong> above)<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>If an adjective has <strong><em>two syllables<\/em><\/strong> and does not end in <strong><em>-y<\/em><\/strong> or if the adjective has <strong><em>three or more syllables<\/em><\/strong> use this form: <strong><em>more + adjective<\/em><\/strong>. (<em>Like the example using <strong>expensive<\/strong> above.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>If an adjective has <strong><em>two syllables AND ends in -y<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>change the -y to -i and add -er<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>**<em>Note: There are irregular adjectives (see below) and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eflnet.com\/tutorials\/adjcompsup.php\">list of adjectives that follow two rules<\/a>.**<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This vacuum is <strong><em>cheaper<\/em><\/strong> than that one. (<em>Rule 1<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>The house is <strong><em>colder<\/em><\/strong> than usual. (<em>Rule 1)<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Her hair is <strong><em>more tangled<\/em><\/strong> than usual. (<em>Rule 2<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>My time is <strong><em>more important<\/em><\/strong> than yours. (<em>Rule 2<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>That comedian was much <strong><em>funnier<\/em><\/strong> than the last one. (<em>Rule 3<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>He seems much <strong><em>busier<\/em><\/strong> than he was last week. We accomplish this by using a <strong>superlative adjective<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Brittany was the <strong><em>tallest<\/em><\/strong> in the group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To compare Brittany\u2019s height to all of the others in the group, the writer uses the superlative form of tall.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>That professor is the <strong><em>most interesting<\/em><\/strong> of all my professors.<\/li>\n<li>That professor is the <strong><em>least interesting<\/em><\/strong> of all my professors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For superlatives, follow the same rules as comparatives except that you use <strong><em>-est<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>instead of -er<\/em><\/strong> and use <strong><em>most\/least instead of more\/less<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This vacuum is the <strong><em>cheapest<\/em><\/strong> one I could find. (<em>Rule 1<\/em>)<\/li>\n<li>Our house is the <strong><em>biggest<\/em><\/strong> one on the street. (<em>Rule 1<\/em>)\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong><em>most important<\/em><\/strong> decision you\u2019ll ever make in your life. (<em>Rule 2)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>This purse is the <strong><em>least expensive<\/em><\/strong> one I\u2019ve looked at so far. (<em>Rule 2)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>That comedian is the <strong><em>funniest<\/em><\/strong> I\u2019ve ever seen!
