For each of these questions, the answer will usually be either \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno.\u201d In many cases, you can also answer a Yes\/No Question with \u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d \u201cmaybe,\u201d \u201cpossibly,\u201d etc. Nonetheless, Yes\/No Questions are always formatted so that the answer <em>should<\/em> be either \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yes\/No Questions are generally formatted like this:<\/p>\n<h4><em>Auxiliary or Modal Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Object or Additional Information?<\/em><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Do you like pizza? <\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Possible Answers: <em>Yes, I do. \/ No, I don\u2019t. <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Are you going to the movies? <\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Possible Answers:<em> Yes, I am. \/ No, I\u2019m not.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Can you open the door? <\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Possible Answers:<em> Yes, I can. \/ No, I can\u2019t.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Have you been to Paris? <\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Possible Answers:<em> Yes, I have. \/ No, I haven\u2019t.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Did you do your homework? <\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Possible Answers:<em> Yes, I did. When put in the negative form, Yes\/No Questions usually have a tone of skepticism or an assumption that the answer is already known. Most Wh- Questions could be answered in more than just two or three ways. However, every Wh- Question begins with one of the following words:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Who<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>When<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Where<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Why<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Whose<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Which<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, all but one of these words begins with \u201cWh\u201d (hence the name of the category). Now, let\u2019s take a look at how you will usually format these questions:<\/p>\n<h4><em>Wh- Word + Auxiliary or Modal Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Object or Additional Information?<\/em><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Who can you see over there?<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Sample Answer: <em>I can see two of my friends.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>What are you eating right now?<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Sample Answer: <em>I\u2019m eating a turkey sandwich.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>When will he arrive at the station?<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Sample Answer: <em>He will arrive at noon.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Where have you been all this time?<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Sample Answer: <em>I\u2019ve been at my parents\u2019 house.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Why do they like English?<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Sample Answer: <em>They like English because it is fun to speak!<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>How would you like your eggs?<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Sample Answer: <em>I\u2019d like my eggs scrambled.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For questions in which \u201cwhat,\u201d \u201cwho,\u201d \u201cwhich,\u201d or \u201cwhose\u201d is the subject, we do not separate the verb into two parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>What is under the couch?<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Sample Answer: <em>There are two pennies and a ball of string under the couch.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Who wants apple pie?<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Sample Answer: <em>I want apple pie!<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Which lamp broke?<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Sample Answer: <em>The red one broke.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Whose dog barked?<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li>Sample Answer: <em>Emily\u2019s dog barked.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Negative Wh- Questions<\/h4>\n<p>While Yes\/No Questions are not as common in the negative form, negative wh- questions are very useful in conversations. These are questions that are usually added to the end of a statement to confirm the validity of the information. For example, if you are pretty certain that something is true, but you would like to confirm the information with someone else, you would ask a Tag Question. Here\u2019s how Tag Questions are formatted:<\/p>\n<h3><em>Positive Statement + Negative Contraction of Auxiliary or Modal Verb + Subject Pronoun?<\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><em>You should leave soon, shouldn\u2019t you?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>He does his own chores, doesn\u2019t he?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>We will be on time, won\u2019t we?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see, when the statement is positive, the tag is negative. However, if the statement is negative, the format changes accordingly:<\/p>\n<h3><em>Negative Statement + Positive Auxiliary or Modal Verb + Subject Pronoun?<\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><em>They can\u2019t swim, can they?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I don\u2019t have enough time to take a break, do I?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>There wasn\u2019t enough food for everyone, was there?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you have a statement without an auxiliary verb, you can simply use \u201cto do\u201d to form the Tag Question. In any case, the tense of the Tag Question should always match the tense of the statement.
