It can be <em>broken down<\/em> (phrasal verb meaning <em>to divide into multiple parts to give detail)<\/em> into these elements:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A verb.<\/li>\n<li>An adverb or a preposition (or both).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Phrasal verbs have some interesting ways of usage:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em>The phrase cannot be understood based on the individual meanings of the words in the phrase. It must be <strong>taken as a whole<\/strong> to be understood.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Phrasal verbs can have multiple meanings.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here are some common examples you should be familiar with as an intermediate level English speaker:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Give up &#8211; To surrender or quit<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I had to give up cigarettes when I decided to start running again.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Hang out &#8211; To casually spend time in a particular place<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hey, we\u2019re going to hang out at the park. Do you want to come?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Calm down &#8211; To relax<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let\u2019s all just calm down and stop arguing.<\/p>\n<h2>Transitive and Intransitive Phrasal Verbs<\/h2>\n<p>Like regular verbs, phrasal verbs are categorized into <strong><em>transitive<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>intransitive<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Transitive phrasal verbs must have a direct object that comes after the phrase.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Intransitive phrasal verbs do not need a direct object.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For example, the phrase \u2018<strong><em>ran into<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 is a <em>transitive phrasal verb<\/em> because you can\u2019t leave the phrase as is. You have to have an object after it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I ran into. His new suit looks great.<\/em> &#8211; <strong>Incorrect<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>I <strong>ran into<\/strong> Paul. His new suit looks great. <\/em>&#8211; <strong>Correct<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The phrase \u2018come over\u2019 is an example of an <em>intransitive phrasal verb<\/em>. It doesn\u2019t need an object.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>You can <strong>come over<\/strong> after the game.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>When is he going to <strong>come over<\/strong>?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, there are some phrasal verbs that are considered both transitive and intransitive based on their meaning. \u2018<strong><em>Take off<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 is a great example of this concept.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Take off your coat<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Take off that hat.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In this context, \u2018<strong><em>take off<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 means <em>to remove something<\/em> and requires an object to be understood.<\/p>\n<p>However, in this example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The plane will <strong>take off<\/strong> soon.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I\u2019m going to go watch the plane <strong>take off<\/strong>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The phrase \u2018<strong><em>take off<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 means <em>to leave the ground<\/em> and does not require an object.<\/p>\n<h2>Separable and Inseparable Phrasal Verbs<\/h2>\n<p>In addition, phrasal verbs are categorized into <strong><em>separable<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>inseparable<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Separable phrasal verbs can be separated in a sentence with a direct object in between the phrase.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Inseparable phrasal verbs must remain together to be understood.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2018<strong><em>Hand in<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 (<em>to submit something<\/em>) is an example of a <em>separable<\/em> <em>phrasal verb<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I\u2019m going to <strong>hand in<\/strong> this paper.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I\u2019m going to <strong>hand<\/strong> it <strong>in<\/strong> after the class.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2018<strong><em>Look after<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 (<em>take care of<\/em>) is an example of an <em>inseparable phrasal verb<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Will you <strong>look after<\/strong> my cat while I\u2019m gone?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>I\u2019m going to <strong>look after<\/strong> my little brother this weekend.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Do I Remember Them All?<\/h2>\n<p>With thousands of phrasal verbs separated into four different categories and multiple definitions, how can anyone be expected to remember them all?<\/p>\n<p>The short answer is: <em>You can\u2019t<\/em>. And that\u2019s perfectly okay!<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to know them all to speak English fluently, and most of the time, you\u2019ll be able to understand their meaning through context. As you expose yourself to the <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/master-english-with-these-advanced-tips\/\">English language at an advanced level<\/a>, you\u2019ll pick up more and more phrasal verbs.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, there are some tricks that will help you learn and remember them faster.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Learning Phrasal Verbs by Topic<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you searched the term \u2018<em>Phrasal Verbs<\/em>\u2019 right now on Google, you would find dozens of phrasal verbs lists broken down by their part of speech: <em>verb, preposition, or adverb<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>While trying to memorize lists may work for some areas of grammar, it isn\u2019t efficient with phrasal verbs. As we stated earlier, there are <em>thousands<\/em> of them in the English language.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, work on exposing yourself to phrasal verbs based on a topic. Even better, choose a topic that greatly interests you.
