We\u2019ll look at beginner, intermediate, and advanced phrases in different situations to help you get started.<\/p>\n<p>Soon, you\u2019ll be on your way to becoming an advanced <strong><em>conversationalist<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; <em>a person who likes to engage in conversation and is good at it.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Why English Conversation?<\/h2>\n<p>Think about <em>why<\/em> conversation is useful.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate goal in learning a language is to communicate. If you want to advance your professional and personal goals, you must be able to converse with many people in different situations.<\/p>\n<p>Conversation can open your mind to new cultures. When you listen and share, you exchange ideas and opinions, and this is an important part of any communication.<\/p>\n<p>It could also be used to improve your communication skills. If you talk to people, you will build confidence in your pronunciation and grammar. You could expand your vocabulary at a faster rate.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, you\u2019ll be able to engage with other individuals in any situation and speak on any topic. You may gain some lifelong friends and networking contacts along the way!<\/p>\n<h2>Learning English Conversation<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/english-speaking\/english-conversation-practice-greetings-questions-and-phrases\/\">So where do you start<\/a>? A solid start with any communication begins with a greeting and introduction. Let\u2019s break down the most common words and phrases.<\/p>\n<h2>Greetings and Introductions<\/h2>\n<h3>Informal Greetings<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hello<\/strong> &#8211; <em>The universal English greeting.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hi<\/strong> &#8211; <em>A little more informal than hello.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hey<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Used with friends or people you\u2019ve met before.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>What\u2019s up?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Very informal greeting used with friends or close acquaintances.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>How\u2019s it going?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Another very informal greeting used only with close friends or acquaintances.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Note: The last two informal greetings are questions you might say after greeting with <strong><em>\u2018Hi\u2019<\/em><\/strong> or <strong><em>\u2018Hey\u2019<\/em><\/strong>. They\u2019re often used as a <em>rhetorical question<\/em> (<strong><em>a phrase that looks like a question but is not supposed to be answered<\/em><\/strong>). Therefore, you won\u2019t necessarily expect an answer or be expected to respond. This is usually because the relationship is close enough that you <strong><em>already know<\/em><\/strong> how they\u2019re doing.<\/p>\n<h3>Formal Greetings &#8211; (These greetings work for any formal or informal situation).<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Good Morning<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Before noon.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Good Afternoon<\/strong> &#8211; <em>From after noon until around 6 p.m. Typically this greeting is based on the height of the sun, so it varies depending on a geographical location.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Good Evening<\/strong> &#8211; <em>After 6 p.m. or after sunset.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Introductions<\/h3>\n<p>If you have never met before, start by exchanging your names. Stick with formal language until you know the person you\u2019re talking to better.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>My name is (name). What is your name?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>This is a very basic example for beginner English speakers. It can sound somewhat robotic, but it accomplishes the goal.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>I\u2019m (<em>name). And you are? &#8211; This is an intermediate\/advanced level introduction. Many times you can skip the \u2018And you are?\u2019 in the introduction as most natives will respond with their name.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019ve met someone before but can\u2019t remember their name (don\u2019t worry, it happens), try to recall where you met the person and use this phrase:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>We met at (place where you met), but I\u2019m so sorry, I don\u2019t remember your name. You are\u2026?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>The phrase is a little informal, but it can politely accomplish the goal of exchanging names. You can skip the \u2018<strong>You are?\u2019<\/strong> here, too.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re with someone else, you\u2019ll also want to introduce that person. You can use these phrases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Please meet (name of person) <em>&#8211; This is a formal, polite introduction that will work in any situation.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>This is my (relationship or title of person) + (name of person)<\/strong> &#8211; <em>This introduction is a little less formal, but it is more commonly used. It\u2019s always good to include a title or the nature of the relationship you have with this person. I.e. \u2018<strong>This is my co-worker Chris\u2019<\/strong> or \u2018<strong>This is my girlfriend Samantha.\u2019<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Native Level Tip<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>If you can\u2019t remember the name of someone, wait for them to introduce themselves to someone else. After they exchange greetings, you\u2019ll know the name and won\u2019t have to ask for it directly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once you have introduced yourself, you can respond with one of the following phrases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nice (or Pleased) to meet you.<\/strong> &#8211; <em>This is the most common response and can be used in formal or informal settings.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pleasure to meet you.<\/strong> &#8211; <em>A little more formal, but it can be used informally if you just say<\/em> \u2018<strong>Pleasure.<\/strong>\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can click here for a more in depth look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sp3xU5WvRjA\">English greetings and introductions in conversation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Small Talk in English Conversation<\/h2>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve exchanged greetings and introductions, it\u2019s common to move on to <em>small talk.<\/em> Small talk is <strong><em>a polite conversation about unimportant or uncontroversial matters<\/em><\/strong>, especially in <strong><em>social settings<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>How are you doing?<\/h3>\n<p>Typically, you\u2019ll start by asking <em>how a person is doing<\/em>. You may or may not get an actual answer when you ask. If somebody asks you this question, you don\u2019t have to answer honestly, too.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018How are you doing?\u2019<\/em> has become so ingrained in English speech that it\u2019s usually mixed in the introduction. Here are some common phrases to use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How are you doing?<\/strong> or <strong>How are you?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Both phrases can be used in a formal or informal situation.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>How have you been?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Used when you already know someone but haven\u2019t seen them in a while.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>How\u2019s it going?<\/strong> or <strong>What\u2019s up?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>We discussed these phrases earlier as very informal greetings, but you can also use them in informal small talk.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>What\u2019s going on?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Another example of a very informal version of \u2018How are you doing?\u2019<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In response to \u2018<em>How are you doing?\u2019<\/em>, you can keep it short and simple. Then add \u2018<em>How are you?\u2019<\/em> in return. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I\u2019m doing well. How are you?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Great! And yourself?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Doing fine. How are you doing?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many times, this level of <em>small talk<\/em> is enough for the conversation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BVyimjKkHco\">Here is a video resource<\/a> you can use to master responses to \u2018<em>How are you doing?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Questions<\/h3>\n<p>If you continue with questions, it\u2019ll bring your communication skills to a new level. Questions will let you exchange thoughts and ideas on a variety of topics. Conversations that go into this phase will help you master the language.<\/p>\n<p>There are two types of questions you can ask:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Closed Questions<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Have a simple \u2018yes\u2019 or \u2018no\u2019 answer.<\/em>Examples:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Did you have a good day?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Are you enjoying the conference?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Was the food good?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Open Questions<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Require more elaboration than just \u2018yes\u2019 or \u2018no.\u2019<\/em>Examples:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How was your day today?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What do you think about the conference?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>How was the food?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>When you ask and answer questions, pay close attention to what is being said.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, most questions start with the <strong><em>five W\u2019s<\/em><\/strong>. They are: <strong><em>who, what, when, where, and why<\/em><\/strong> (<em>and <strong>how<\/strong><\/em>). You can use these words to enhance and propel forward any conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a great video resource to help you with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cyfLcLqHn_8\">asking questions in an English conversation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Clarification<\/h3>\n<p>Even native speakers have moments when they don\u2019t understand someone. Sometimes they\u2019re not sure about the topic or just didn\u2019t hear the question. It\u2019s always okay to ask for clarification if you didn\u2019t understand something.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some phrases you can use in that situation:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I\u2019m sorry, I\u2019m not sure what you mean. Could you repeat?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>More formal.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sorry, I didn\u2019t understand. Could you repeat that?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Informal.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you didn\u2019t hear someone, use these phrases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I\u2019m sorry. I didn\u2019t hear you. Would you repeat that for me?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Formal.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sorry. I didn\u2019t catch that. Could you repeat?<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Informal.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, it\u2019s okay if you didn\u2019t understand someone. People are willing to clarify or repeat something.<\/p>\n<h2>Closing an English Conversation<\/h2>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve spoken for a while and it\u2019s time to move on, you will need to close the exchange. It\u2019s always polite to let the other person know that you\u2019re ready to finish talking. Here are a few phrases you can use in different situations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I have to get moving.<\/strong> &#8211; <em>You can use this if you have another appointment or a meeting to attend.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>I\u2019ve got to run.<\/strong> &#8211; <em>This phrase is informal and is used if you have an appointment to attend.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Thank you for your help\/the information!<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Say this to close out an informative conversation.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>I understand\/Understood. Thank you!<\/strong> &#8211; <em>It\u2019s a little shorter and used more informally, but this phrase is also good to finish an informative conversation.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Thank you for your time!<\/strong> &#8211; <em>This is a formal way to close a conversation with someone who has provided a lot of helpful information.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Goodbyes<\/h3>\n<p>After closing the conversation, you should end with some form of <em>goodbye<\/em>. Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Have a good one\/day!<\/strong> &#8211; <em>This ending will work in any situation.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Talk to you soon\/Talk soon.<\/strong> &#8211; <em>A solid informal ending that works even if you don\u2019t expect to actually speak with the other person soon.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Great to see you \/ Great talking with\/to you!<\/strong> &#8211; <em>These informal endings will work in most situations and are very common.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Catch you later!<\/strong> &#8211; <em>Very informal way to exit a conversation..<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Beyond that, you might have an extra <strong>\u2018bye\u2019<\/strong> or <strong>\u2018goodbye\u2019<\/strong>, but it\u2019s safe to say: you just had a conversation!
