I\u2019m done with shopping! I\u2019m quitting cold turkey.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHa! Until you get another paycheck?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWell&#8230;.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><em>Origin<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The origins of quitting \u2018cold turkey\u2019 are ambiguous, but here\u2019s what we know about the expression. The phrase first appeared in print in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It evolved from similar English expressions like \u201ctalk cold turkey,\u201d which was used as a request for someone to stop speaking formally and start speaking plainly.<\/p>\n<p>It has always meant to abruptly stop something, but linking the phrase to addiction became more common in the early 1900s. The phrase was used to refer to the physical look of opioid addicts who had recently stopped using. Newspapers in New York City described their appearance as cold and pale. The figurative language in the expression is self-explanatory. It has been in use since the 1700s and was stated as \u2018in the air\u2019 by writers at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Coin flipping, which of course involves tossing a coin up in the air, could be another possible origin. , However, it\u2019s worth noting that the practice of coin flipping dates back to Roman times, well before any English expressions&#8211; or the English language itself&#8211; existed.<\/p>\n<h2>I\u2019m Broke<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"English Expressions and How to Use Them\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/MNODyJf.jpg\" alt=\"Man opens up an empty wallet\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><em><br \/>\nMeaning of this English Expression<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019m broke\u2019 means to have no money. The term is used literally when referring to someone who has lost all of their money, or as slang to exaggerate a lack of money. The phrase started to be widely used in the late 19th century, and the original printed use of the term was in a 1900 edition of a Pennsylvania newspaper called <em>The Evening Democrat<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cKeep your chin up. Most attribute the reference to a bird that sits very still and very quietly when hunted by a predator. The bird won\u2019t move until the predator makes a move.<\/p>\n<h2>Devil\u2019s Advocate<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"English Expressions and How to Use Them\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/N0AdEGl.jpg\" alt=\"Devil's advocate\" width=\"5071\" height=\"4339\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><em>Meaning of this English Expression<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Playing the devil\u2019s advocate\u2019 is one of the more complex idioms in English. It means to advocate for an unpopular opinion or idea for the sake of argument. The goal of playing the devil\u2019s advocate is to analyze the validity of an opinion or idea.<\/p>\n<p>People play \u2018devil\u2019s advocate\u2019 to help others see a different point of view. It helps in the act of <strong><em>mediation<\/em><\/strong> (<em>intervention in a dispute in order to resolve i<\/em>t), so that two parties can resolve their issues.<\/p>\n<h3><em>Use<\/em><\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cWow, paying for university is getting more and more expensive every year.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTrue, but to play devil\u2019s advocate, you\u2019re receiving some of the best education in the country. Better teachers require higher pay.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWow, she can be so rigid sometimes.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWell, let me play devil\u2019s advocate and ask, \u2018Doesn\u2019t she have a right to be rigid?\u2019 I mean, she worked nearly 10 hours a day for over a month on the project, and she just wants everything done correctly.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI see your point.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><em>Origin<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>The origin of \u2018devil\u2019s advocate\u2019 makes it seem quite literal. The current use of the expression began in the 18th century, but the idiom originates from the Latin term \u2018<em>advocatus diaboli<\/em>\u2019. This was a church title created by the Pope in the 1500s.<\/p>\n<p>Someone who worked for the church as a devil\u2019s advocate would need to create a list of arguments against someone nominated for <strong><em>canonization<\/em><\/strong> (<em>the official admission of a dead person into sainthood<\/em>). If the person was still viewed as good and holy after the arguments, then they would be recommended for approval to the Pope. In spite of referencing the devil in a religious sense, this position wasn\u2019t viewed negatively by the church or society. Over time, the term has evolved into the meaning we understand today.<\/p>\n<h2>Use These English Expressions Together<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to truly mastering English expressions, context is everything. In other words, you don\u2019t just use new expressions in isolation&#8211; for the best learning, <em>use these English expressions with each other<\/em>. Tell someone you\u2019re trying to keep your chin up, even though you\u2019re broke. Play the devil\u2019s advocate on reasons someone might not want to quit a bad habit cold turkey.
