AUD CPA Exam Duration – How Long is the Test?

240 minutes . . . how do you measure the Auditing and Attestation (AUD) section in time? In flashcards, in friendships, in late nights, in cans of Red Bull, in mnemonics, in test prep, in pajamas, in audit tools 🙂 Let’s discuss how long is the AUD section of the Uniform CPA Exam.

Current Version: AUD CPA Exam Duration – How Long is the Test?

You may want to sit down for this. AUD is currently a 4 hour, 240 minute, or 14,400 second beast that covers your favorite AICPA and PCAOB topics. Specifically, you have the opportunity to encounter questions in the following areas: Engagement Acceptance and Understanding the Assignment; Understanding the Entity and Its Environment; Performing Audit Procedures and Evaluating Evidence; Evaluating Audit Findings, Communications, and Reporting; Accounting and Review Services Engagements; and Professional Responsibilities. Moreover, you will take on 90 multiple choice questions and 7 task-based simulations that have the following weights: 60 percent and 40 percent, respectively. Do you want a test day timeline? Consider using the following timeline:

Testlet 1: 45 minutes

Break: 5 minutes

Testlet 2: 45 minutes

Break: 5 minutes

Testlet 3: 45 minutes

Break: 5 minutes

Task-Based Simulations: 90 minutes

This timeline equates to 1 minute and 30 seconds per multiple choice question and 12 minutes and 51 seconds per task-based simulation. If you think you may want more time on the multiple choice questions or prefer having fewer breaks, adjust accordingly.

New Version: AUD CPA Exam Duration – How Long is the Test?

You may have heard that the bird is word starting April 1, 2017 there will be a “new” CPA Exam. Specifically, the “new” AUD section will have 72 multiple choice questions and 8 to 9 task-based simulations. Let’s do some quick math:

72 MCQs – 90 MCQs = -18 MCQs

8 to 9 TBS – 7 TBS = 1 to 2 TBS

That’s right. The “new” AUD section will have 18 fewer multiple choice questions and 1 or 2 more task-based simulations. So how long is the “new” AUD section? The “new” AUD section will still be four hours. Perhaps the neatest part of the “new” CPA Exam is that you will have the opportunity to enjoy what is known as a “new standardized break.” This break, which is 15 minutes long, will not count against your testing time. If you want more information about the “new” AUD section, check out the Practice Analysis Final Report. As always, remember to breathe.
