But what is a good score? <strong>For most students, scoring above average, 21 or higher, is a good score. There are two types of scores that fall in this range: your <strong>section scores<\/strong> and <strong>your composite score<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h3>Section Scores<\/h3>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/what-is-act\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ACT exam<\/a> comprises three required sections and two optional sections:<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nRequired:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>English<\/li>\n<li>Math<\/li>\n<li>Reading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Optional:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Science<\/li>\n<li>Writing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The score on each section is calculated by converting the <strong>raw score<\/strong>\u2014the number of questions you answered correctly in a given section\u2014to a scaled score in that 1-36 range. (There are no penalties for questions with an incorrect answer). <\/p>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/act-score-calculator\/\"><strong>ACT score calculator<\/strong><\/a> can give you a sense of how many questions you need to answer correctly to get a certain scaled score. <\/p>\n<h3>Composite Scores<\/h3>\n<p>To make your <strong>composite<\/strong>, or overall, score, the test maker then averages your three scores on English, Math, and Reading. This is also scored using the 1-36 ACT scale. If you take them, Science and Writing are scored separately.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what is a good ACT composite score?<\/strong> Many factors will help you determine what a good ACT composite score is for you. But before we get into that, know that the composite score is not the only score that matters! Or, rather, percentile<em>s<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/act-percentiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Your ACT percentiles<\/a> compare your scores to the scores of other test-takers. In your score report, you\u2019ll be able to see where you stand both in terms of your composite score and your section scores. <\/p>\n<p>If you scored in the 90th percentile, for example, you scored better than 90% (or 90 out of every 100) test-takers. If you scored in the 50th percentile, you scored better than half of your peers. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#contents\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/files\/2017\/08\/back-to-top-button-1-e1502493700147.png\" alt=\"Go back to the top of the post.\" width=\"150\" height=\"30\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11102\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"highestactscore\"><\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is the Highest ACT Score?<\/h2>\n<p>Seeing as the ACT score range is between 1 and 36, naturally, <strong>the highest score that one can receive on the ACT is a 36<\/strong>. Here are some facts to know about the max ACT score: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2024, 3,041 test-takers (out of 1.37 million test takers) scored a perfect 36 on the ACT<\/li>\n<li>You can generally miss around 5 questions on the ACT and still earn a 36 (depending on what sections you miss them in!)<\/li>\n<li>The 99<sup>th<\/sup> percentile of test takers includes those who earn a 35 on the ACT.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Getting the highest ACT score, while an amazing feat, is nothing worth breaking your back over. Sure, a perfect score does make your application all the more appealing&mdash;colleges love to brag about the percentage of perfect-scoring applicants they&#8217;ve admitted each year. And a 36 will definitely get your application moved to the top of the pile at less competitive institutions.  <\/p>\n<p>Still, a 36 was worth a lot more ten or fifteen years ago. Not only have many colleges and scholarships adopted more well-rounded admissions approaches to giving out letters of acceptance and\/or monetary awards, but the number of students getting a perfect score on the ACT is also growing every year\u2014truly an indication of just how competitive the college admissions process is becoming. <\/p>\n<p>My advice? If you end up scoring in the 34 or above range on the ACT, it might be best if you&#8217;re trying to wow admissions committees through other aspects of your application. This advice is particularly relevant to admissions at Ivy Leagues and other competitive schools; some of these schools have a whopping quarter of their entering class scoring perfectly on the ACT or SAT. <\/p>\n<p>But if you feel like getting the highest ACT score can help you shine at less competitive colleges, make sure to check out our post on <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/perfect-act-score-stories\/\">perfect ACT score stories<\/a> to know how it&#8217;s done!   <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#contents\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/files\/2017\/08\/back-to-top-button-1-e1502493700147.png\" alt=\"Go back to the top of the post.\" width=\"150\" height=\"30\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11102\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"goodactscore\"><\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is a Good ACT Score?<\/h2>\n<p>The ACT, like its cousin the SAT, is a standardized test meant to measure both knowledge gained in high school and potential to succeed in a college setting. <strong>The higher the score, the more likely you will get into the colleges of your choice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That being said, there&#8217;s no straight answer on what is a good or <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/what-is-a-bad-act-score\/\">bad score<\/a>; it depends entirely on you, your goals, your grades, your extracurriculars, the schools you want to apply to, and a variety of other factors. <\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, while most schools care about the composite score, some will look specifically for your subject area scores (particularly Science if you are planning a STEM major). So even a number isn\u2019t just a single number.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objectively speaking, a score of 32 or higher would put you in a competitive position for <strong>any<\/strong> school that you choose apply to.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>But unless you want to go to super-elite schools, you might find it more useful to focus on your GPA and extracurriculars than aiming for the max score (especially with so many competitive schools being test-optional). After all, a good score for a sophomore won\u2019t be the same as a good score for a senior. <\/p>\n<p>Please note that the numbers on the ACT scoring chart are loose projections&mdash; a lot of factors affect how high of a score you need to achieve. ACT students with lower scores may still get into their dream schools and students with top scores may not (you can skip to the section on <a href=\"#actscorestopschools\">ACT scores for the top 100 U.S. Universities<\/a> to see the competitive score ranges for a given school). Still, this is a good place to start as you plan your <a href=\"https:\/\/act.magoosh.com\/?utm_source=actblog&#038;utm_medium=blog&#038;utm_campaign=pasq217&#038;utm_term=inline&#038;utm_content=act-scores\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ACT test prep<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h3>Good Scores by Section<\/h3>\n<p>So those are good composite scores. But what are good scores by ACT section? Most people would consider any score above the average (around 20 per section, though this varies slightly by year) to be &#8220;good.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>However, if you&#8217;re applying to very competitive schools, aim for the 90th percentile or higher. This translates to the following scores:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>English<\/strong>: 20.1<\/li>\n<li><strong>Math<\/strong>: 20.4<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reading<\/strong>: 21.2<\/li>\n<p>Meanwhile, ACT Writing is scored slightly differently. So what makes a <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/what-is-a-good-act-writing-score\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">good ACT Writing score<\/a>? <strong>Here, a 10+ puts you in the range for the most competitive colleges. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The general guidelines for a &#8220;good score&#8221; by section also apply to <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/what-is-a-good-preact-score\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">PreACT scoring<\/a> (though you won&#8217;t find an essay on that exam!). However, this is not the case for <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/what-is-a-good-act-aspire-score\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ACT Aspire<\/a>, which uses entirely different scoring scales.<\/p>\n<h3>Average Scores<\/h3>\n<p>So by now, you know the basic facts and may already have an idea on how you&#8217;d score on the ACT, either because you have taken real or <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/act-practice-test\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">practice ACT tests<\/a> or you can <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/act-to-sat-score-conversion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">convert your SAT to ACT score<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>But where do you stand compared to the average test-taker?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The average exam score was 19.4 (composite) in the 2023-2024 school year<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.act.org\/content\/dam\/act\/unsecured\/documents\/MultipleChoiceStemComposite.pdf\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Source: ACT.org<\/a>). Basically, if you scored above 21 overall, you\u2019re ahead of the curve. <\/p>\n<p>To see how <em>far<\/em> ahead of the curve you are, or the points you\u2019d need to score to reach 21, <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/act-percentiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">looking at ACT percentiles is a good place to start<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re feeling super competitive, you can also check out how your score compares locally in <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/average-act-scores-by-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Average ACT Scores by State<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#contents\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/files\/2017\/08\/back-to-top-button-1-e1502493700147.png\" alt=\"Go back to the top of our post.\" width=\"150\" height=\"30\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-11102\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"actscorestopschools\"><\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>ACT Scores for the Top 100 U.S. Universities<\/h2>\n<p>Though not the only piece in the college applications puzzle, your ACT score is the first thing most admissions counselors see. <strong>If you don\u2019t score in the same range as most of the current students, it is going to be VERY HARD to convince them that you would be the perfect fit.<\/strong> That&#8217;s why we provided for you, in the table below, the 25th-75th percentile scores (also known as the \u201cmiddle 50%\u201d scores) for the top 100 U.S. universities. <\/p>\n<p>What do all those numbers mean? In short, the middle-scoring 50% of incoming students scored within this range. 25% of incoming students scored below the lower number, while 25% of incoming students scored above the higher number. You can search by school&#8211;if your schools of interest rank in the top 100, you&#8217;ll find it on this table.
