While this includes your grasp of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, it also includes your comprehension of rhetorical skills, such as effective writing strategy, organization, and <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/act-english-style-questions\/\">style<\/a>. Other critical things to note about ACT English:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s the first section of the ACT.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>You have 35 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions<\/strong>\u2014about 42 seconds per question.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Only 40 of those questions count toward your score.<\/strong> The rest are unscored &#8220;field-test&#8221; questions that ACT is trying out. You can&#8217;t tell which are which, so treat every question as if it counts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One quick note before we dig in: these numbers describe the <strong>Enhanced ACT<\/strong>, the current, shorter version of the test (fully rolled out across the 2025\u20132026 testing year). If a prep book or website tells you ACT English has 75 questions and a 45-minute time limit, it&#8217;s describing the old test. Your Composite score is now the average of just three sections (English, Math, and Reading, with Science optional), so English makes up a full third of your Composite. If you&#8217;re still choosing between tests, our <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/act-vs-sat\/\">ACT vs. SAT comparison<\/a> breaks down the differences.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what you need to know about ACT English, from what it tests to tips and practice!<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-on-the-act-english-test\" style=\"color: #4D2079; padding: 0;\">What Is on the ACT English Test?<\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"color: #C5168C;\">Question Types<\/h3>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.act.org\/content\/act\/en\/products-and-services\/the-act\/test-preparation\/description-of-english-test.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACT&#8217;s official test description<\/a>, English questions fall into three reporting categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Production of Writing (38\u201343%)<\/strong>: These questions focus on the writing&#8217;s overall development and organization. In other words, does the writing meet the author&#8217;s purpose? Is it cohesive and unified?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Knowledge of Language (18\u201323%)<\/strong>: These questions test your understanding of style. That means choosing the most effective and precise word while maintaining the piece&#8217;s tone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conventions of Standard English (38\u201343%)<\/strong>: These are the grammar and punctuation questions most students associate with ACT English. They test everything from sentence structure to punctuation to common English usage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Notice something? <strong>Grammar is no longer more than half the test.<\/strong> On the old ACT, Conventions of Standard English made up 51\u201356% of the section. On the Enhanced ACT, it shares top billing with Production of Writing. So if your study plan is all comma rules and no rhetoric, you&#8217;re preparing for less than half of the section.<\/p>\n<p>However, these seemingly general categories test very specific information! Take a look at the content you&#8217;ll see tested in these English questions.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #C5168C;\">Content Tested<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Punctuation (including commas, apostrophes, colons, semicolons, and dashes)<\/li>\n<li>Subject-verb agreement<\/li>\n<li>Verb forms and verb agreement<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/ambiguous-pronoun\/\">Pronoun<\/a> forms and pronoun agreement<\/li>\n<li>Adjectives and adverbs<\/li>\n<li>Comparative and superlative modifiers (such as &#8220;Magoosh is <em>more<\/em> fun than my <em>most<\/em> entertaining friend.&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>Sentence structure (such as independent and dependent clauses, misplaced modifiers, run-on sentences and comma splices)<\/li>\n<li>Effective essay and paragraph organization and clear, concise writing style, including <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/act-english-how-to-approach-strategy-questions\/\">strategy<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For even more detail on what to study for this section, check out this <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/act-study-guide\/\">nifty guide<\/a>!<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #C5168C;\">Question Formats<\/h3>\n<p>ACT English questions are passage-based. You&#8217;ll work through a series of short passages; specific words and phrases are underlined on the paper test, or highlighted if you test online. Most questions correspond to one of these marked portions, and a handful focus on a paragraph or the passage as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the big format change: <strong>every question on the Enhanced ACT now has a question stem.<\/strong> That means each question actually asks you something specific, like &#8220;Which choice is most grammatically acceptable?&#8221; On the old test, many questions were just a list of alternatives to the underlined phrase, and you had to infer what was being asked. &#8220;No Change&#8221; still appears as an answer choice on many questions, and yes, sometimes it really is the right answer.<\/p>\n<p>One more thing you can stop worrying about: reverse questions. Here&#8217;s how to master it!<\/p>\n<p>Ensure you understand the test format and your current knowledge level by taking a <a href=\"https:\/\/magoosh.com\/act\/act-practice-test\/\">practice test<\/a>. This will help you understand the areas where you need to brush up, as well as giving you a much-needed preview of what you&#8217;ll see on test day! Don&#8217;t only practice English by itself, though.
