SAT Vocab Monday: Words with Friends

Batching words into one easy group makes life fun. In fact, it’ll probably put you in a good mood! Speaking of which, you’ll probably come across as a more likeable person—which is exactly what the next few words describe.

Some people are just likeable. The way they smile; the ways they say things; the way everybody wants to be their friend. Well, that person is affable. But an affable person definitely isn’t intimidating—as some cool people can be. An affable person is easy to talk and confide to.

If you know somebody named Amy who is friendly and outgoing, then that is the perfect mnemonic. See “amiable”—or Amy-able, if you will—describes somebody (though not necessarily a girl) who is friendly and easy to get along with.

During a beauty pageant there is a certain segment called Miss Congeniality—no bathing suits here. Congeniality is all about a pleasant disposition. So anybody who is pleasant to be around is congenial. Sadly, the winner of the Miss Congeniality segment of the contest typically doesn’t go on to win the pageant.

Imagine a pleasant host, one who makes sure that you are comfortable and happy. “May, I take your coat?”; “Can I get you anything to drink?”; “Anything I can do make your stay more pleasant?”—all of these are questions somebody being cordial might ask. Of course, if they keep asking you these questions all night long, it might get kind of creepy.
