Top 5 (Free!) Online GRE Resources

The costs of studying for the GRE and applying to graduate school can add up. So, why not make the most of all the internet has to offer with free resources? Aside from our eBooks and blog ๐Ÿ˜‰ here are the best online resources to fuel your studies. ย Enjoy!

Top 5 Free GRE Resources

1. ETS Powerprep Tests – Free online practice tests from the test-makers themselves. Need I say more? Use these to get a feel for not only the content of the GRE, but also the basics of the exam- how the calculator works, how to flag and return to questions, etc.

2.ย Magoosh’s GRE Vocabulary Flashcards– Our GRE vocabulary flashcards cover more than 1000 of the most important GRE vocab words. You can either download the app or use the desktop version.

3.ย Manhattan GRE Practice Test – Manhattan is a reputable source of GRE information, so this practice test is of a very high standard. Complete with explanations!

4. ย Khan Academy – Khan Academy is a great place to learn about…pretty much anything. While there isnโ€™t a section specifically dedicated to GRE Prep, youโ€™ll still find plenty of material that is really helpful for your studies, in particular math. Just search for the concept youโ€™re having trouble with, and my guess is youโ€™ll find a video that explains it perfectly.

5.ย ETS Essay Topic Pools, Argument and Issue – ETS provides the entire pool of tasks from which your essay prompt will be selected. Thatโ€™s right–the ENTIRE pool, meaning you will see one of these topics on your actual exam. Practice writing essays with these prompts.

Other Free (and awesome!) GRE Resources

A Big List of Magoosh’s Free GRE Resources – A comprehensive collection of all the free GRE resources provided by Magoosh compiled for your convenience. ๐Ÿ™‚

      Hi Sunaina,

I am sorry to hear that you aren’t reaching your target score. Before I begin, I will say that it’s not common to see an increase like the one you’re describing, especially within a month. If you have flexibility in your schedule, I would recommend that you give yourself some more time to prepare. However, if you don’t, I would suggest that you study with high intensity for the remaining days. I would recommend using prep material. I do recommend getting a premium Magoosh GRE subscription plan, and using our 1-Month Study Schedule. You’ll have to accelerate this study plan in order to fit your timeline. You can feel free to use other prep courses as well, but I would highly recommend that you use some resource. Again, if you have flexibility, I would suggest that you give yourself some more time to better reach your target score. I hope this helps, and good luck!

        Thanks for your suggestion.
Sorry for bothering you again, but could you please tell me how this premium one month plan will help me. I mean will someone guide me where am i going wrong or which part should i focus more or something like that.

          HI Sunaina,

Unfortunately, without a lot more information I can’t tell you where you are ‘going wrong’ or what you need to focus on. But I can definitely tell you why using a study program like Magoosh can help you (and any student) improve!

First, in order to do well on the GRE you need to learn strategy and methods for solving difficult questions. If you just rely on free online sources, you might not get this sort of in-depth instruction on how to improve your problem-solving skills.

Second, getting a good score on the GRE requires that you practice. A LOT. And you have to practice with high quality resources. In Magoosh, you have access to 1100+ questions that cover all of the question types and topics you will see on the exam. More importantly, we provide you with explanation videos for every single one of those questions so that you can deepen you understanding of how to solve them.

Third, with Magoosh you can see exactly where your strengths and weaknesses are. We provide a score predictor that allows you to track your progress, and you can use our built-in tools to track your performance by question type or concept. This can help you to see exactly what you need to work on, and answer the question the question that I cannot answer right now ๐Ÿ™‚

Fourth, whenever you have a question, you will have access to help and support from our team of awesome student help experts. We are there to give you study advice or answer specific questions about questions or lessons.

Finally, we are affordable! You can even try us for a 7-day free trial if you aren’t sure yet ๐Ÿ™‚

I took the test early this year and had 290 which is lower than the score required by the schools I wish to enroll ( Virginia Tech, Oregon State and Colorado State). The minimum score to qualify for admission is 300 but I want to get 310.

Please I would be glad if you could assist me on how to get good books, assist me with strategies that work and how to prepare an effective study plan.

      Hi there! Good question. ๐Ÿ™‚

Honestly, you should probably trust other students’ reviews more than mine since I work for Magoosh. ๐Ÿ™‚ We tend to recommend a lot of Manhattan Prep materials, but there are students who can talk about their experiences with all kinds of programs. There are also a few up-and-coming new online platforms that I know exist but are not fully developed yet. You should definitely ask other students (current and former) on GRE forums about their experiences and thoughts!

Does ETS Powerprep offers two preparation tests every time you register for the actual test?

Magoosh Test Prep Expert March 19, 2016 at 1:26 pm #

      Hi Clau,

      Good question! ๐Ÿ™‚

Unfortunately, the PowerPrep II software only has a set of two tests that are not refreshed or changed, so you can only get two free practice tests. You’ll have to venture elsewhere for more tests, like with us here at Magoosh or with companies like Manhattan Prep who also have good quality practice tests!

      • Claudiu March 20, 2016 at 2:07 pm #

cool thank you very much, I already use Magoosh and I am very happy with the practice tests!

well, i have that 5 lb book of manhattan, and still those 6 online tests are not free for me

  11. Srutartha June 27, 2014 at 11:48 pm #

    Hello Rachel,
I am planning to write my first GRE during December 2014. I have Barron’s study guide, their cd-rom which contains two full length model tests. And also Magoosh vocabulary flashcards. I have six months to prepare. Can you please tell me if this is enough? I would like to take online practise tests too, but then I have a financial situation in my family at the moment. So I don’t want my parents spending too much on me. And all the upgraded lessons and practise tests obviously paid ones. Can you please give some suggestions so that I can get a good score on my first GRE. I could really use some help now. Thank a lot in advance. ๐Ÿ™‚
