Practice Question of the Week #1: NEW! Win a Premium Subscription to Magoosh GRE!

Every Tuesday, we’ll be posting up a free practice question from our database:

Submit an answer and an explanation in the comments by 1PM Pacific Daylight Time on Wednesday, and we will randomly pick a reader who answered correctly (whether by commenting here, tweeting us, or commenting on the Facebook post) to win a free premium subscription to the Magoosh GRE product!

Try it out to see if you can figure out the answer and let us know if you need any hints! The answers will be posted on Wednesdays at 2PM with step-by-step explanations.

The questions will be drawn from various question types and topics, so this will be a good way to get some extra practice on a weekly basis and feedback when it comes to strategies and methods!

Here’s the first question:

Note: Figure not drawn to scale

A. 3/4

B. 5/4

C. 6/5

D. 4/3

Area of square ABCD = 25 so side = 5

Side of small shaded square = x
Side of large shaded square = 5-x

    (5-x)^2 / x^2 = 9

    5-x/x = 3

    5-x = 3x

    The answer is B) 5/4

Hi, Darshee! Can you write up an explanation of how you got your answer as well? We need both an explanation and an answer in order to add you to the group from which we’ll be picking a winner!
